Fans of Hulk's club Zenit opposed to black and gay players - 17/12/2012

Source : http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com

The largest fan group of Russian champions Zenit St Petersburg have demanded the club refrain from buying black and gay players following turmoil surrounding the acquisition of Brazil striker Hulk.

"We're not racists but we see the absence of black players at Zenit as an important tradition," Zenit fan club Landscrona said in a letter, called the "Selection 12 manifesto", posted on its website.

"It would allow Zenit to maintain the national identity of the club, which is the symbol of St Petersburg."

Zenit have been the only top club in Russia to have never signed an African player while the northern city of St Petersburg is known to have a strong right-wing nationalist influence.

The fans said they want more home-grown or European players in the team.

"We only want players from other brotherly Slav nations, such as Ukraine and Belarus as well as from the Baltic states and Scandinavia. We have the same mentality and historical and cultural background as these nations," the letter said.

They also expressed their opposition to having "sexual minorities" in the team and demanded that each player would give "101 percent effort" in every match.

Several prominent black players have turned down lucrative offers from the wealthy club over the past 12 months after receiving death threats from Zenit fans, local media reported.

A Zenit spokesman said on Monday the club would not comment on the fans' letter.

Former Zenit and Russia striker Alexander Panov said the fans have no right to influence the club's selection policy.

"If we don't have enough good players from St Petersburg, then what should the club do?" the St Petersburg native was quoted as saying by local media.

"All clubs around the world have black players. If they are absent from Zenit - it's Zenit's problem. I don't think fans should demand the club buy or don't buy certain players. The fans have the right to go to the stadium or stay home."

Zenit have been in turmoil for the past few months with several senior players unhappy after the wealthy club splashed out more than £50 million on Brazilian Hulk and Belgium midfielder Axel Witsel just before the transfer deadline.

Zenit demoted Russia skipper Igor Denisov to the reserve team in September after he refused to play, issuing an ultimatum to renegotiate his contract in line with what Hulk was making.

Denisov was later allowed to rejoin the first team after making an apology.

Northumbria Police are trying to identify the Manchester City fans who threw flares into sections of the crowd during their side's 3-1 win at Newcastle on Saturday.

A statement said: "A flare was thrown from the section containing Manchester City fans into a section of Newcastle United fans, no one was injured and it was quickly extinguished.

"A second flare was set off in the section containing Manchester City fans.

"Officers at the scene carried out extensive enquiries, including checking CCTV and speaking with available witnesses. However, the person or people responsible are yet to be identified.

"We take incidents such as this extremely seriously and enquiries are still ongoing. Officers continue to work with colleagues at Greater Manchester Police."

The investigation is one of two launched by the Northumbria force following the game.

They also received a complaint involving an allegation of racist abuse after City substitute Aleksandar Kolarov become involved in a lengthy exchange with fans holding an Albania flag as he warmed up on the sidelines.

Australia: A-League football fans defend right to support with ‘passion’ - 22/12/2012

Source : http://www.australiantimes.co.uk

THE Australian football community has erupted in outrage this week, with ‘soccer’ fans from across the nation banding together to form the Passion Is Not A Crime movement in response to the alleged bias against the game featured in Channel Nine sport reporting.
The backlash was sparked last Saturday when Channel Nine broadcast a report on the unruly behaviour of supporters attending the second Sydney derby between Sydney FC and recent A-League addition the Western Sydney Wanderers. The report detailed the need for a police escort for Wanderers fans walking to the match, and the illegal use of flares by supporters in the stands.
The implications of hooliganism in Channel Nine’s reporting of the Sydney derby provoked a concerted effort by fans of the A-League to address the perceived bias against ‘soccer’ in the Australian media. The Passion Is Not A Crime campaign was created in an effort to mount an organised social media response to the network, with thousands of supporters delivering their message via Facebook and Twitter.
Australian football supporter website From The Stands claims that Channel Nine’s reporting of the incidences at A-League matches intentionally blows crowd disruption out of proportion to create the impression that an element of hooliganism exists within the Australian football community. They claim that only three fans were ejected from the stadium during the Sydney derby, and that the police’s escort of football fans to the match is a standard practice in football matches across the world for logistical reasons rather than because there is an atmosphere of violence.
Channel Nine responded to the initial phase of the Passion Is Not A Crimecampaign with a statement on their Facebook page asserting their right as a media organisation to report on whatever they saw fit. After this comment provoked increased outrage from football fans, Channel Nine clarified their statement with a post asking their Facebook followers to determine whether they felt the network’s coverage of football was fair.
Football blogger Max Cornell claims that the media bias against football in Australia occurs across most broadcast networks when it comes to portraying unfair stereotypes of football supporters. He says that the proportion of fans arrested or expelled from A-League matches is far lower than that at other sporting events, yet the media does not cover these incidences in their reporting.
Cornell said: “The Sydney Derby has 26176 people at the game, with 3 arrests. That means statistically, for every 8725 supporters who went to the game, 1 would get arrested or break the law and create an unruly environment.
“In the 2009 Melbourne Boxing Day Cricket Test, broadcasted by Channel Nine, saw 59,206 people turn up for the second day of play. On that one, single day there were 91 evictions for anti-social behaviour, and 13 arrests for drunk and disorderly conduct. That equates to one in every 569 supporters creating an unpleasant atmosphere for families and children at the game.”
Many football fans involved with the Passion Is Not A Crime campaign believe that Channel Nine’s vested interest in rugby league leads to the network protecting the ‘brand’ of the NRL at the expense of football and its supporters. Cornell points out that 43 rugby league fans were ejected from the 2012 NRL Grand Final, yet there was no coverage of these ejections and police commended the crowd for being relatively well-behaved.
Cornell said: “There is nothing wrong with Channel 9 covering incidents at a football match. However, there is a huge problem with how they cover it. The over exaggeration Channel 9 will go to just to make out that you may not find your way back home if you enter the deathly pits of a football game in Australia is unbelievable. We all know it isn’t like that, and it is a shame the media has to go such extremes to paint the wrong picture.”
Passion Is Not A Crime has organised a grassroots protest to take place during the A-League matches in the lead-up to Christmas. Supporters from different clubs will chant slogans in support of the game and rejecting the image of hooliganism portrayed in the media.

Police searches Russian football fans' union office - 22/12/2012

Source : http://news.in.msn.com

Police have raided the office of the All-Russia Fans Union during the investigation of a shooting incident Dynamo Moscow soccer club base.
According to the Sport-Express daily, the incident happened in October at Moscow Dinamo's training base in Moscow region where unidentified attackers fired several shots from paintball guns to players and coaches leaving several wounded, reports Xinhua.
The hooligans also threw leaflets with threats and insults targeting the club's foreign players. A criminal case was opened under the hooliganism article.
Head of the All-Russia Fans Union, Alexander Shprygin told reporters the police also searched his apartments and seized personal computers. Shprygin said his relatives apartments were also searched.
"I have informed the Dinamo club and the Russian Football Union heads about that," Shprygin said.
Shprygin has been a founder and head of the All-Russia Fans Union since 2007.
In November, during a game between Dinamo and St. Petersburg's Zenit soccer club in Khimki near Moscow, unidentified fans threw a firecracker to the Dinamo goalkeeper injuring his eyes.
Following that incident, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has proposed strict laws to restrict unruly fans.

Manchester City's Aleksandar Kolarov in incident over Albania flag

• Police receive complaint about racist language at Newcastle
• Aleksandar Kolarov in 'altercation' with fan bearing Albania flag

Manchester City collected the three points without too much trouble with a 3-1 win over Newcastle but their season took another unexpected turn when Aleksandar Kolarov, their Serbian defender, allegedly became involved in an altercation with a home fan bearing the national flag of Albania.

Northumbria police confirmed they had received a complaint of racist language being used and were investigating the matter. A spokesman said: "Northumbria police takes such allegations extremely seriously and inquiries are ongoing into the incident."

Kolarov was warming up on the touchline at the time, before his introduction as a first-half substitute, when he caught sight of the flag and made a remark to its owner. It is not clear exactly what was said. Two Albanian Newcastle supporters made the complaint. City had no official comment to make other than to say that they had been made aware of a verbal exchange between a player and a spectator, and Kolarov travelled back to Manchester on the team bus.

Neither Roberto Mancini nor Alan Pardew witnessed the incident and were unable to comment further, with the City manager understandably preferring to stick with Manchester rivalries rather than venture into Balkan politics.

Galatasaray’s Burak Yilmaz hit with smoke bomb by fans of his former club

Season 12/13 - December - Page 4 335493TURQUIE8

This year seemed to have an unusually high and disturbing number of incidents of fans throwing firecrackers at players during matches and as 2012 draws to a close, those incidents continue. During Sunday's 0-0 draw between Trabzonspor and Galatasaray, the home fans threw an object (perhaps a water bottle?) at Burak Yilmaz, who left Trabzonspor for Gala after scoring a club record 33 goals in 30 appearances last season.

With Yilmaz on the ground in the fetal position, Trabzonspor defender Giray Kacar went over to check on his former teammate and that's when a smoke bomb went off near Yilmaz's rear end. Kacar went down, covering his eyes, as Yilmaz moved away, holding his head and his singed backside.

According to our friends at Eurosport, both players would be OK and continued on in the match after receiving medical treatment.
