Northern Ireland : Crusaders FC - Cliftonville FC - 16/02/2013

Source : http://www.bbc.co.uk

Crusaders-Cliftonville cancellation: Three charged

Two men in their 40s and a 21-year-old woman have been charged following Saturday's protest outside Seaview football ground in north Belfast.

All three are accused of disorderly behaviour and assault on police, while one of the men is also charged with a provocative act.

All three were released on police bail to appear in court on 13 March.

The Irish Premiership match between Crusaders and Cliftonville was called off due to the protest.

North Belfast MP Nigel Dodds called the cancellation of the match as "a sad day" for football and for the area.

Police said they were attacked with bottles and other missiles after they began moving protesters.

Mr Dodds said it was "deeply disappointing".

It is understood there had been tensions about Cliftonville fans walking through the Skegoneill area on the way to the ground.

"I want to pay credit to the two clubs Cliftonville and Crusaders, along with the residents in Skegoneill and others - community workers, political representatives - who had all worked very, very hard to try to get an agreement, had reached an agreement," Mr Dodds said.

"Unfortunately the events of yesterday meant the game didn't go ahead.

"I think it's a sad day for football and a sad day for north Belfast.

"We will be working in the coming days in conjunction with everybody of goodwill to try to move things forward."

Mr Dodds said reports of "heavy-handed" policing should be investigated.
Safety concerns

A small 'white line' protest had been allowed to take place for about 40 minutes on Saturday afternoon.

Police moved it on to allow fans to get into the north Belfast ground.

The match was called off at 15:10 GMT because of safety concerns.

Most Cliftonville supporters and many Crusaders fans had been unable to gain access to the stadium.

A police spokesperson said: "Upon learning of the public disorder both clubs advised police that the game would not proceed.

"This is a regrettable outcome for the clubs, the many genuine fans who wanted to watch the match and indeed the wider north Belfast community."
'Sad day'

Crusaders chairman Stephen Bell said it was "a sad day for football".

"The football family need to hold together at this difficult time," added Bell.

Sports Minister Carál Ní Chuilín said the protest had nothing to do with football and players and fans had been left frustrated.

"Now, instead of reflecting on a derby game featuring the top two teams in the league, we are looking back at a disheartening afternoon for everyone connected with the clubs," she said.

"Crusaders and Cliftonville, while rivals on the pitch, have forged many links in recent years and I trust the events of today will not derail those efforts."

Secretary of State Theresa Villiers said: "It is regrettable that an afternoon of sport was ruined by violent protests.

"Such behaviour achieved nothing except upset and disruption for fans and local residents who were looking forward to the game."

Arrests After Gang Attacks Spurs Fans In Lyon

Three men have been arrested after three Tottenham fans were injured when a group of up to 50 masked thugs attacked a bar on the eve of Spurs' game in Lyon.

Rhone police prefect Jean-Pierre Cazenave-Lacrouts said they have detained three Frenchmen, one a member of a far-right organisation and the other two fans of Olympique Lyon.

Three English fans were hurt during the clashes between rival supporters. Seven people were slightly injured," Mr Cazenave-Lacrouts said.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers smashed doors and threw cast iron chairs, wooden objects and a flare into The Smoking Dog pub in Lyon.

Up to 150 Spurs fans were drinking in the bar, popular among ex-pats in the French city, ahead of tonight's Europa League match.

It is the second time that Tottenham fans have been targeted in apparent anti-Semitic attacks in the last three months.

In November, fans of the club, which has a traditionally strong Jewish following, were ambushed inside a pub in Rome on the eve of their game against Lazio.

Eyewitnesses inside The Smoking Dog said the thugs attacked the bar at 10.18pm on Wednesday night and then returned shortly after to launch another assault on the pub, which was damaged extensively as a result.

The pub's landlord, Dave Eales, from Retford, said the pub was "rammed with Tottenham fans watching the Champions League on the television. The front of the pub, which is made up of reinforced glass, was attacked by 20-25 people."

He added: "They threw projectiles through the windows. There was a stand off. They didn't get in to the bar. Then it calmed down. Then they came back a second time and it all started again.

"There were three injured Tottenham fans taken away by ambulance. One of them had a head injury. I'm not sure how bad it was."

Far-right thugs were blamed for the knife attack on Tottenham's supporters in Rome and two eye-witnesses claimed the attack could have had an anti-Semitic motive.

One, who did not want to be named, said: "There were 50 who attacked in the first wave and 25 in the second.

"It's a pretty scary thing when you're confronted by people doing Nazi salutes."

Spurs fan Christian Radnege, who was in the bar at the time of the attack, said: "They came in making Nazi salutes. It was frightening."

Mr Eales, 42, said he had anticipated trouble may occur and that he had told the Lyon police as much earlier this week.

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "We are aware of reports of an attack on British nationals in France and are offering consular assistance."

A Tottenham spokesman said: "Club officials attended an incident last night in Lyon.

"A group of around 50 people confronted fans. The situation was dealt with and arrests were made within the hour. Three fans sustained minor injuries and received prompt medical assistance."

He said Spurs officials and stewards will be in the city along with French police ahead of kick-off.

Borussia Monchengladbach Fans Stabbed in Rome Prior to Lazio Europa League Tie

Three Borussia Moenchengladbach fans were stabbed in Rome prior to the club’s Europa League game in the Italian capital.

The fans, in Rome for their side’s Europa League game against Serie A side Lazio, were stabbed at different locations around the city, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper.

None of the injuries were life-threatening according to the report.

Over 8,000 ‘Gladbach fans were in Rome although the stabbings reportedly happened before the game at the Olympic Stadium.

A 50-year-old doctor was attacked at Ponte Milvio, a 30-year-old was stabbed nearby and a third was attacked outside the Hotel Hilton, said Gazzetta.

It is not the first time fans of Lazio are alleged to have to have been linked to acts of violence against visiting fans.

The Rome club has been targeted by European football’s governing body UEFA after the Italians’ Europa Cup tie with English Premier League side Tottenham was marred by racist chanting earlier this season.

Lazio were previously fined £32,500 ($51,800, 40,200 euros) by UEFA after monkey chants were directed at Tottenham players during the reverse fixture in London in September.

Before the match against Spurs in Rome, fans of the north London club were attacked in a pub by a group of about 40 people, leaving several in hospital.

Two people, reportedly with connections to Rome’s other Serie A club AS Roma, were arrested and charged with attempted murder.

Four football fans arrested after disturbance at Rangers game - 20/02/2013

Source : http://local.stv.tv

Four football fans have been arrested after a disturbance during a Rangers home match.

The incident took place during the Glasgow side’s game against Annan Athletic on December 18 last year.

On Wednesday, the Football Co-Ordination Unit for Scotland (FoCUS) said its officers had arrested two men aged 16, a 24-year-old man and a woman aged 18 that morning.

A spokeswoman said the arrests were made in the Glasgow area "following a retrospective investigation into an alleged disturbance within Ibrox stadium" during the Third Division tie.

All four were arrested and released on an undertaking to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Friday, March 22.

The arrests came in addition to eight other men who were arrested at the game. All of them, who were aged between 17 and 31 years old, were released on an undertaking to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date.

Strathclyde Police said the incident was brought "swiftly under control" during the match, which Rangers won 3-0.

Australia: Tough new fines to crack down on sport hooligans - 22/02/2013

Source : http://www.abc.net.au

Fines for hooliganism offences at major sporting events will more than double under legislation to be introduced in the Victorian Parliament.

Under the proposed new laws, the penalty for possessing a flare at a sporting match will increase to more than $700.

Lighting a flare will now attract a fine of more than $1,000 and three penalty units.

The measures are part of a State Government crackdown on anti-social behaviour at sporting matches.

Premier Ted Baillieu says he expects the new legislation will reduce incidents of sporting hooliganism.

"[This] is designed to help police and venue managers manage the unacceptable behaviour of a very small minority of individuals that can spoil the sporting experience for everybody," he said.

The new legislation also targets unauthorised ticket sellers and expands bans on aerial advertising.
