England fan left paralysed in wheelchair after attack by Russian hooligans at Euros - 03/06/2021
Source : https://www.mirror.co.uk/
Andrew Bache, 55, was assaulted while having a drink with fellow England fans during the UEFA European Football Championship in 2016. He suffered brutal injuries
A football fan was left paralysed for life after an attack by Russian hooligans ahead of a match.
Andrew Bache, 55, was assaulted while having a drink with fellow England fans during the UEFA European Football Championship in 2016.
He was hit in the head and received three or four blows, including some while he was on the floor, witnesses said.
The incident happened when about 150 Russian men stormed the Old Port district in Marseille, France, where England fans had gathered to drink before the match.
Andrew, a Tesco delivery driver from Portsmouth, was left in a wheelchair and is now cared for by his son, the Daily Star reports.
As a result of the attack, he also suffered from memory loss, as well as physical and mental impairments.
Two of the Russian hooligans involved in the beating stood trial in December 2020.
Video footage played in court showed 55-year-old Mr Bache being punched and kicked as he lay on the ground.
The court heard the 15 second attack changed his life forever, The Sun reports.
A medical expert, Michel Blanc, told the court it was a "wonder how [Mr Bache] is still alive".
Psychologists found that Mr Kossov lacked empathy and "a grip of reality" while Ivkine was "neurotic", the court was told.
Pavel Kosov, a 33-year-old truck driver, was jailed for 10 years for leading the attack on Andrew.
PE teacher Mikhail Ivkine, 34, was sentenced to three years for hurling a chair at him, despite claiming it was in self-defence as a judge ruled it to be "illegitimate".

Euro 2020: Police to seize 33 passports from football fans - 05/06/2021
Source : https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/
Avon and Somerset Police plan to seize dozens of passports ahead of the European Football Championships next week.
Officers will take 33 passports from fans subject to football banning orders (FBO).
It's hoped the move will limit antisocial or violent behaviour around the tournament.
Fans have until June 14 or 15 deadline to hand over the passport or an arrest warrant could be issued.
There are 42 people subject to FBOs in the Avon and Somerset Police area.
Of these, 33 are passport holders and will be required to surrender them.

Passports will remain with police until after the last quarter-final match is played on Saturday, July 3.
Those that were involved in the disorder in Bristol during the World Cup 2018 and received FBOs also have conditions that prevent them from visiting certain areas in the hours before and after televised England matches.

Meet the Orel Butchers: Russian hooligan group who targeted England fans at Euro 2016 - 12/06/2021
Source : https://www.dailystar.co.uk/
When picturing 'ultra groups', the barra brava's of Boca Juniors, the left-wing stance of St Pauli, and the Delije of Red Star Belgrade often come to mind.
It's not often that people picture Oryol, a provincial Russian town that was the home to Ivan the Terrible, and the current home of a football team in the Russian amateur leagues: FC Oryol.
However, their devoted supporters - named the 'Orel Butchers' - made a name for themselves during Euro 2016 - when they claimed responsibility for the attack on English fans in Marseille.
They shot to fame thanks to the BBC Panorama documentary called 'The secret world of Russia football hooligans' ahead of the 2018 World Cup.
The Butchers were recognisable in France and their shirts read: "Storm over Europe. Tour de France. Fuck Euro 2016."
And they're not a usual hooligan group: they practice paramilitary techniques, and urban warfare - explaining their attacks in the streets of Marseille.
Before they announced themselves to Europe in 2016, they had been long since notorious in their home country.
They have strong nationalist sentiments, and - during their formative years - the group even released their own magazine entitled 'Testosterone'.
The Butchers will be behind their native Russia for Euro 2020 - and they kick off their campaign the highly fancied Belgium in Saint Petersburg on Saturday.
They will be hoping to recapture their 2018 form, when they dispatched Spain in the round of 16.

England fans boo players taking a knee before Romania friendly at Riverside Stadium
Audible jeers were again heard ahead of the second England friendly to take place at Middlesbrough's ground in the last four days before sections of applause broke out.
All but two of Romania's players joined the England starting line-up in taking a knee before the match started.
Gareth Southgate said on Saturday the England squad were "more determined than ever" to take part in the anti-racism gesture despite the jeers ahead of the friendly win over Austria on Wednesday.
"I don't want to give it any more oxygen than I did yesterday (Saturday)," Southgate told Sky Sports News after the 1-0 win courtesy of captain Marcus Rashford's second-half penalty.
"We have answered it as much as we can. I have made it clear where the players stand with it. We are a united group. We are going to keep doing it.
"We understand the reaction might be as it was today, but it is not going to stop us. I don't want to talk about it in any more detail now."
The England manager said at his pre-match press conference his players had "had enough" of being called on to explain their show of solidarity and added the squad would ignore any "adverse reaction".

Russia fans boo Belgium players for taking the knee before Euro 2020 clash
Russia fans booed the visiting Belgium players in the St Petersburg Stadium because they took the knee before kick off to show their support for the Black Lives Matter movement. The majority of teams have decided to take the knee throughout Euro 2020.
"Major tournaments don't come around often and when they do, it's an opportunity to unite friends, families and the country.
"This collective support is what spurs our team on during challenging moments and it gives them the best chance of succeeding.
"As the team has reiterated many times, they will collectively take the knee ahead of their fixtures during the tournament.
"They are doing this as a mechanism of peacefully protesting against discrimination, injustice, and inequality.
"This is personally important to the players and the values the team collectively represents.
"This gesture of unity and fighting against inequality can be traced back as far as the 18th century.
"It is not new, and English football has made it very clear that it does not view this as being aligned to a political organisation or ideology.
"There can be no doubt as to why the players are taking the knee and what it represents in a footballing context.
Euro 2020: England train with rubber chicken for Croatia clash "We encourage those that oppose this action to reflect on the message you are sending to the players you are supporting.
"Please respect their wishes and remember that we should all be united in the fight to tackle discrimination. Together.
"They will do their best for you. Please do your best for them."

'Football hooligans' accused of attacking Celtic fans in Ajax riots dodge justice as case axed - 13/06/2021
Source : https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/
Ten alleged Ajax hooligans who ran riot in Glasgow before a Celtic match have dodged conviction in Holland – because Dutch prosecutors were not persuaded by evidence from Scots police.
Supporters and publicans were beaten senseless by visiting fans in attacks on Celtic bars in the east end of the city ahead of a Europa League match with the Amsterdam side in November 2015.
One bar owner who described the scenes as “violence on an industrial scale” hit out at the cops and Crown Office.
Billy Gold, the owner of the Hielan Jessie pub in the Gallowgate, said: “The Police and Crown Office have hardly covered themselves in glory.
“We were being told in the afternoon that hooligans were coming to us, yet, when they did, there were no police to be seen.
“As far as the Crown Office is concerned, jurisdiction should lie where the crime happened. That means they should have been tried here.”
The Crown Office gave up on prosecuting the rampaging gang in this country, passing the case to prosecutors in Amsterdam because they believed they had a greater chance of securing convictions.
When proceedings opened last week in Holland, the Dutch prosecutor said he was not convinced by evidence provided by Police Scotland officers.
No Scots officers travelled to Holland for the trial but three went to Amsterdam in January 2020 to present evidence to an examining magistrate.
But Dutch prosecutors said they did not provide “sufficient evidence” to support a conviction.
Scots police could not show to their satisfaction how they recognised ten of the suspects.
However, convictions have been sought against five individuals for “public violence against persons and goods” and they are expected to be sentenced at a further hearing in August.
Despite advance warnings the Ajax fans were coming to Scotland for trouble, up to 40 wearing masks and balaclavas were able to launch organised attacks on four pubs popular with Celtic fans.
Hoops Bar boss Neil O’Donnell, then 37, was battered senseless with a concrete garden slab.
His jaw was fractured in six places and a titanium plate had to be inserted with screws, which he will have for life.
He said: “I always thought this was being done for show with little prospect of convictions. I have no idea how any of these guys were identified by the police. I was assaulted but I could never have picked out anyone responsible.”
Police Scotland said: “Following an extensive investigation into incidents from November 26, 2015, a report was passed to the Crown Office Procurator Fiscal Service.
“As this case is still ongoing, we can’t comment further.”
A Crown Office spokesman added: “The procurator fiscal at Glasgow received a report concerning a 23-year- old female and 14 males aged between 19 and 38 in connection with alleged incidents on November 26, 2015.
“After carefully considering the facts and circumstances and discussing with representatives from the Netherlands, Crown Counsel instructed that the matter be transferred there for Dutch prosecutors to take forward.”

England fans boo taking of the knee before first Euro 2020 game against Croatia
Some England fans booed the players' anti-racism gesture of taking a knee before their opening Euro 2020match with Croatia at Wembley.
The taking of the knee was booed at both of England's warm-up games at Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium over the past two weeks, leading Gareth Southgate to speak out in defence of his players and even write an open letter to fans calling for the country to come together.
Ahead of the start of Euro 2020, Southgate reasserted England's intention to take the knee throughout the tournament, and on Saturday the Football Association called for fans to support the team's stance.
However some of the 22,500 supporters at Wembley did boo before they were drowned out by cheers and applause.

Hundreds of police seen 'storming' London's Leicester Square as fans clash during Scotland v England match
Fans were gathering in the area throughout Friday as excitement for the next Scotland match at Euro 2020 grew, but this video from the scene during the match suggests that things may have gone a little too far.
Hundreds of officers in high-vis jackets can be seen charging towards fans – with some carrying their batons as they ran – clearing them out of the area.
Smashing glass, and screams and shouts can be heard in the background as the commotion was unfolding in the square.
Half way through the footage a glass bottle can be seen flying through the air – it looks like someone threw it, aiming for officers – followed by the noise of it smashing as it hit the ground, just missing its target.
Police then can be seen to line up, creating a barrier of sorts, to avoid another clash of the fans in the area.
The disruption follows warnings ahead of the game from Scottish ministers and London's mayor, Sadiq Khan, for ticketless football fans not to travel to the city.
