Dimitri Payet throws bottle back at supporters who storm the pitch

That's because Nice vs Marseille on Sunday evening descended into absolute chaos.
In their first big home match for more than a year, Nice supporters marked it with thuggish behaviour by throwing bottles at Marseille players whenever they took a set-piece.
And it reached boiling point towards the end of the match as Dimitri Payet was hit with an object.
And he reacted furiously by throwing it back into the crowd.
It resulted in ugly scenes as Nice fans stormed the pitch.
Footage also shows an apparent Marseille staff member punch a Nice fan in the face.
Meanwhile, Marseille manager Jorge Sampaoli completely lost the plot at Nice defender, Jean Clair Todibo.

Nothing was known about the wording of the alleged racist slander against Fayulus. The allegations were made by Sion actor Filip Stojilkovic in SRF-Confirmed interview. “That’s true. It’s not fair for these fans to do that,” the striker said.

Nice vs Marseille : Police arrest man and order stand closure after Ligue 1 match abandoned - 23/08/2021

Source : https://www.the42.ie/

LOCAL AUTHORITIES IN Nice ordered a four-match stand closure and local police arrested a man as investigations continued into the ugly incidents which led to the abandonment of Nice’s weekend Ligue 1 match with Marseille.

The prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes department said the Popular South stand at the Allianz Riviera in Nice would be closed after fans threw projectiles which led to serious incidents on Sunday during the Nice-Marseille fixture.

“In view of the seriousness of the incidents that occurred, and without waiting for the sanctions to be decided by the professional football league (LFP), the prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes has taken the following decisions this evening: closure of the Populaire Sud stand where the incidents occurred for the next four home matches,” wrote prefect Bernard Gonzalez in a statement.

Nice supporters invaded the pitch and confronted Marseille’s Dimitri Payet, who had thrown a bottle lobbed at him back into the crowd. A brawl then broke out involving players and spectators.

A 28-year-old man suspected of attacking a Marseille player was arrested and taken into custody on Monday evening, police and judicial sources told AFP.

The man was presumably a fan of the home team, the Nice prosecutor, Xavier Bonhomme, told AFP.

Earlier his office announced that it had opened several investigations, notably for “throwing projectiles” and “aggravated violence”.

The (LFP) released a short statement saying it had summoned the two clubs to a hearing on Wednesday and “strongly condemned the violence”.

The hosts were leading the Mediterranean derby 1-0 when the game was interrupted in the 75th minute as Payet threw a bottle back into the crowd as team-mates came across to remonstrate with Nice fans behind the goal.

Supporters streamed onto the pitch and a melee began involving players, staff, fans and stewards. Marseille coach Jorge Sampaoli had to be restrained by members of his own staff.

The match was halted for over an hour and finally abandoned after Marseille refused to return to the pitch.

In farcical scenes, the Nice players came back out and the referee placed the ball by the corner flag where the game had been stopped, before blowing his whistle.

The league said it aligned itself with local authorities who wanted to restart the game “to guarantee public order”.

The LFP must decide whether to replay the game or award Nice a victory because Marseille refused to return to the pitch.

“The league wanted the match to restart. We decided for the safety of our players, who were attacked during the pitch invasion, not to resume,” said Marseille president Pablo Longoria, adding the referee “was with us” and decided to stop the game.

Nice, meanwhile, blamed Marseille for fanning the flames.

“While nothing can excuse the actions of a few individuals guilty of throwing bottles…there is no doubt that it was the attitude and actions of several members of Olympique de Marseille that saw the incident escalate out of control,” Nice said in a statement.

They claimed one Marseille assistant coach knocked out a supporter who “remains in hospital” and said two Nice players — Justin Kluivert and Jean-Clair Todidbo — were attacked by Marseille security staff.

“One should not overlook the provocative actions of several Marseille players in the first half which only added to tensions around the stadium.”

There were also reports of incidents in the VIP box involving the presidents of the two clubs.

The match was attended by over 32,000 fans with spectators allowed back inside stadiums in France after almost all of last season was played out behind closed doors due to coronavirus restrictions.

Politicians called for punishments to be handed out to those responsible.

Roxana Maracineanu, France’s Minister Delegate in charge of sport, said those guilty should be punished “if we can find them…I think there needs to be punishments for the club in question.”

Christian Estrosi, the centre-right mayor of Nice, got involved too, tweeting: “Violence is always intolerable. There must be punishments after (the league) has determined who was responsible.”

“The behaviour of some supporters was unspeakable but so was that of the Marseille president in the stands and the coach on the field,” he added.

French league calls for 'collective action' after Nice-Marseille fan trouble - 24/08/2021

Source : https://www.france24.com/

The French league (LFP) called for "collective action" after ugly scenes caused the abandonment of Marseille's game at Nice, in a letter to the country's government and seen by AFP on Tuesday.

On Sunday evening, home supporters invaded the pitch and confronted the visitors' Dimitri Payet, who had thrown back a bottle lobbed at him by the crowd.

A brawl then broke out involving players and spectators.

"The very regrettable violent scenes... remind us that safety at football matches and the control of some supporters are particularly complex," the LFP's president Vincent Labrune wrote to France's ministers of the interior, law and education as well as its delegate in charge of sport.

"The LFP is quite limited in its ability to control the problems of violence and public order.

"It is, in fact, essential that the troublemakers are significantly sanctioned and that necessitates collective action from the clubs, authorities, local and national government and also, especially the law," it added.

The LFP also mentioned objects thrown onto the field during Marseille's game at Montpellier on August 8 and at Rennes' home match with Nantes on Sunday as well as crowd trouble in three other top-flight fixtures this season.

Earlier on Tuesday, Marseille's US owner Franck McCourt said he supported his team's decision to leave the field at the Allianz Riviera stadium at the weekend.

After the incidents on the south coast, local authorities in Nice opened investigations and police arrested one man.

On Wednesday, Marseille and Nice will appear in front of a LFP disciplinary committee with the behaviour of their players, coaching staff and directors being discussed.

French football league bans spectators at Nice, suspends Marseille physio - 26/08/2021

Source: rfi.fr

French top-flight football club Nice have been ordered to play their next home game behind closed doors, while a member of Marseille's backroom staff has been suspended following the brawl which forced the abandonment of the French Ligue 1 game between the two sides last weekend.

The administrative body of the French league (PFL) told Nice that spectators will be banned from Saturday's game against Bordeaux at the Allianz Riviera stadium as punishment following last weekend's pitch invasion and mass brawl involving fans, players and staff.

Marseille's physical trainer Pablo Fernandez was suspended "from all official duties" after being accused of hitting a supporter.

Last Saturday's game was halted after 75 minutes when Marseille midfielder Dimitri Payet threw a bottle, which had been thrown at him, back into the Nice end of the stadium.

Dozens of fans then invaded the pitch and confronted Payet.

Marseille eventually refused to play on, fearing for their safety, and the game was abandoned with Nice leading 1-0.

Further sanctions from PFL likely

The PFL added that further measures are likely to be announced regarding more sanctions as well as the fate of the game itself.

Meanwhile, a Nice supporter accused of aiming a kick at Payet is to appear in court.

"He will be presented to the court at the end of his police custody for 'unlawful intrusion on the playing area disturbing a sporting event' and 'voluntary violence at a public gathering'," said the deputy public prosecutor, Jean- Philippe Navarre.

"This person aimed at a kick at Dimitri Payet," he said.

The man has a court history for incidents unrelated to sport.

England : Autopsy identifies link between football fan’s death and attack in Southend six years ago - 25/08/2021

Source: https://www.yellowad.co.uk/

Detectives investigating the death of Simon Dobbin, who was seriously injured in an assault in Southend in 2015, have received the results of a post mortem which took place last year which show there is a causal link between the attack and his death.

Cambridge United fan Simon was left with permanent brain damage after being assaulted in East Street following a match between Cambridge and Southend United on March 21, 2015.

In 2017 13 people were convicted and sentenced in connection with the incident.

Sadly, in October last year, at the age of 48, Simon died.

A forensic post-mortem carried out has identified a link between the assault and Simon’s death.

Acting Detective Superintendent Stephen Jennings, from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: “We have received the final report following the post-mortem examination and it shows pathologically there was a causal link between the assault Simon was subjected to, and his death.

“We will now carry out an investigation to see if we can directly and evidentially show who was responsible for his death.

“I know Simon’s story has touched the lives of many people and we are supporting his family.

“My thoughts are with his friends and loved ones.”

Vitesse Arnhem - RSC Anderlecht - 26/08/2021

Source : https://netherlandsnewslive.com/

Arnhem fears fan violence around Vitesse-Anderlecht: emergency regulation to keep hooligans away

An emergency regulation will apply to the entire city of Arnhem from 5 p.m. this afternoon, which should make it possible to exclude supporters of the Brussels football club RSC Anderlecht. The Belgians will play against Vitesse in Gelredome at 7 p.m., but the public is not welcome there.

According to the municipality of Arnhem, the police have ‘strong indications that the match and the run-up to it are used for an attempt at a violent clash between different supporter groups’. Vitesse and Anderlecht will meet in the play-offs for the European Conference League, the last hurdle before the group stage of that tournament. Last night around 3 a.m. loud fireworks were set off outside the Anderlecht hotel in Arnhem, leaving some players of the Belgian top club awake for hours.

Anderlecht supporters receive support from Ajax fans
By order of UEFA, no fans of the visiting club are allowed in all matches in the preliminary round of the Conference League, for which Vitesse qualified as number four in the Eredivisie last season.

Supporters from Belgium, supported by supporters from Amsterdam (Anderlecht have close ties with Ajax), would nevertheless intend to travel to Arnhem for a confrontation with the Vitesse supporters. The Arnhemmers, in turn, would have been offered support from supporters of the Belgian club RFC Liège.

‘Fight deals’ for city center or park

According to the authorities, there is mutual contact between all these supporter groups and ‘fighting agreements’ have already been made. ‘Possible locations for such a fight are the city center of Arnhem, a park in the area or a catering facility with ties to Vitesse, on the day of the match or possibly the evening before.’

The emergency ordinance allows the police to check the city’s approach roads and prevent vehicles from entering the city. The Mobile Unit will be deployed in the event of an immediate threat of violence. The authorities in Arnhem are working closely with police units from Brussels, Amsterdam and Liège.

Seven arrests in Brussels

The emergency ordinance applies until 11:59 p.m. on Thursday evening. At the first leg, last Thursday, the Brussels authorities also announced an emergency regulation. Even then there were indications of a clash between rival supporter groups. Dozens of Vitesse supporters were then barred, seven of them were arrested.

Arnhem’s deputy mayor Cathelijne Bouwkamp hopes that the measures will ‘prevent our residents, visitors and football fans from being exposed to violence’. She is proud that Vitesse is involved in European football. "Arnhem supporters all deserve a chance to safely enjoy this match. There is a lot at stake for Vitesse and I hope for a good result."

Cambridge United: Police rush to 'heated' incident between football fans

Police were called to an incident between fans after Cambridge United's win over Bolton today (August 28).

Tensions were high as fans left the Abbey Stadium after the Cambridge vs Bolton match that resulted in a 1-0 win for Cambridge.

There were reports 'a Bolton fan spat in the face of a Cambridge fan' which led to things getting fairly heated between the two sides.

The altercation happened at the junction on Newmarket Road and Ditton Walk.

Police worked to defuse the situation and it is unknown if any arrests were made.

Officers arrived quickly at the scene and it is reported that the incident has wrapped up.

Cambridgeshire police have been approached for comment.
