CCTV installed to help police Barrow AFC matches - 08/08/2022

POLICE have installed new CCTV cameras around the Barrow football ground to help monitor incidents.

New cameras have been placed next to Barrow's AFC ground on Holker Street to support policing on matchdays.

The cameras will be in place to secure the safety of match goers, according to police.

Cumbria Police said the CCTV cameras have been put in place in the area 'to support the policing response to football games and will allow us to monitor incidents'.

PC Rickie Wallbank, the dedicated football officer for Barrow AFC said on Twitter: "There is extra police CCTV being installed in and around Holker Street which will be utilised on match days to ensure maximum safety is continued."

Police made five arrests and issued another caution when Barrow met Carlisle United in the Cumbria derby earlier this year.

Barrow hosted Carlisle in league football in front of supporters for the first time since 1964.

Men in their 20s, 30s and 40s were apprehended in connection to offences including drug possession and assault of a police officer.

A man in his 20s was given a caution for possession of Class A drug and a public order offence.

Earlier in the year police issued a warning online after a Barrow fan was arrested on suspicion of assault on an away supporter during a match against Salford City..

Three Bluebirds fans were issued with club bans for behaviour that 'fell below' what is expected from a Barrow AFC supporter.

PC Wallbank said at the time: "The behaviour of a very small minority has been unacceptable of late and we cannot and will not tolerate it.

"Salford on Tuesday night, there was one away ejection. Sadly after the game a Barrow supporter was arrested on suspicion of assault on an away supporter.

"This is completely unacceptable. We are there to cheer the team on not cause issues with opposition fans."

Data released in 2021 showed in the preceding five years Barrow AFC fans were among the most law-abiding in the football league.

The meeting corresponding to the tenth day of the "A" championship between Petrochemicals and Huracán ended in serious incidents between supporters of the two teams, outside the Laprida stadium.

At the start of the match, a group of Huracan team supporters stood on the hills adjoining Laprida's pitch to follow their team, a situation which was not well received by the home fans and sparked unrest.

15 Fans of Israeli Club Maccabi Tel Aviv Arrested in Greece

Greek police arrested 15 fans of Israeli soccer club Maccabi Tel Aviv after finding them in possession of smoke bombs, flares and firecrackers before a Europa Conference League match against Aris.

Police said the fans, between the ages of 16 and 35, were detained ahead of Thursday’s match during a security check. The arrests were announced Friday morning.

The fans were scheduled to appear before a prosecutor later Friday. Five of the suspects are minors, police said.

Aris won the match 2-1 but Maccabi Tel Aviv advanced 3-2 on aggregate.

Copenhagen derby with away fans: 8 arrests, the referee removes a seat from the pitch

Sunday afternoon 7 August was a wild Copenhagen derby at the Parken stadium with nets’ poker trimmed from Copenhagen to Brondby, but off the pitch things went very badly for some people: eight people were arrested.

“We have eight arrests and one administrative detention. Of these, five people were arrested after the game,” Trine Møller, police inspector of the Copenhagen police, told Ekstra Bladet.

Two of those arrested were arrested in the perimeter of the stadium, writes the Danish newspaper. It is not known whether it was related to the broken seats in the away sector, where some of the Brøndby fans destroyed the seats to throw the plastic pieces onto the pitch.

The referee also had to remove a stadium seat from the pitch after the fans threw it from the stands.

The match was also the first Copenhagen derby with the entrance open to visiting fans. It should also be remembered that in a joint statement on Sunday, FC Copenhagen and Brøndby had asked for peace and order among their fans ahead of the derby.

The riots that took place before, during and after last year's Conference League game between Royal Antwerp F.C. and Eintracht Frankfurt in Antwerp resulted in stadium bans for 105 Frankfurt and 44 Antwerp fans, said the Antwerp police this Friday.

The match on September 30, 2021, which ended in a 0-1 victory for the Germans, was spoiled by fans of both teams. Before kick-off, a hundred Frankfurt supporters had been arrested for the attack on an Antwerp supporters' café near Bosuil. During the match, there was a fight in the stand and an Antwerp fan threw a flare at the visiting goalkeeper.

The 105 identified Frankfurt supporters were eventually each given a 24-month stadium ban. Fines totaling 51,300 euros were also imposed.

On the Antwerp side, 44 people were sentenced to a total of 76.5 years of stadium ban and fines totaling 43,800 euros.

Troubles at Dortmund and Bochum train station

A RWE supporter (55) was attacked with a telescopic baton by a young Dortmund supporter at Dortmund-Dorstfeld station. The man who sustained facial injuries was taken to hospital.

Afterwards, there was a fight between the fans of the two clubs, who were leaving the Signal-Iduna-Park. A 30-year-old supporter was injured in the hand and face.

Around 7 pm, in the hall of Dortmund central station, the police had to intervene after the attack on a pharmacy employee who was seriously injured. These four attackers, RWE fans and aged 28, 36, 41 and 63, were arrested.

Later, a fight broke out between RWE supporters and those of Fortuna Köln, who were returning from a trip to SG Wattenscheid at Bochum station. A hundred police officers intervened.

ZAGREB, 16 August, 2022 - A 22-year-old Hajduk football fan was convicted in the Portuguese city of Guimarães for attacking a television cameraman, receiving a suspended prison sentence of one year and three months, and he must pay the cameraman €600 in damages, a local police spokesman told Hina.

A suspended sentence means he has been released, but if he commits a new criminal offence in Portugal during the specified period, he will be imprisoned and serve the sentence, the spokesman said in a telephone conversation on Tuesday.

The football fan, whose name was not revealed by the Portuguese police, was banned from football matches in the next year.

This applies to competitions organised by UEFA, but I think he will not be allowed to attend matches in Croatia or elsewhere in Europe either, the spokesman said.

The incident occurred last Thursday after a Europa Conference League qualifying match between Vitoria Guimarães and Hajduk. Vitoria won 1-0, but failed to qualify for the play-off because it had lost 1-3 in Split a week earlier.

After the match, reporters filmed Hajduk fans leaving the Afonso Henriques Stadium.

Some fans were bothered by this, so they insulted the cameramen and poured water on them, as shown by footage from Portuguese media outlets.

The convicted football fan, a Croatian citizen, lunged at a TVI and CNN Portugal cameraman in front of policemen, the police said after the incident. CNN Portugal said that he kicked their cameraman.

The fan was immediately arrested and, on Friday, brought before an investigating judge in Guimarães, a city in the north of Portugal, where he was sentenced.

He damaged the reporter's camera and must pay him €600 in damages, the police spokesman said.

The fan and his lawyer were not available to Hina for comment.
