Croatia charges nine over PAOK bus attack - 15/02/2011

Croatia on Tuesday charged nine hooligans for attacking a bus of PAOK fans ahead of the Greek club's Europa League match against Dinamo Zagreb in December.

Four Greek nationals were injured in the December 14 incident.

The nine, aged between 18 and 23, were charged with stoning the bus ferrying around 40 Greek fans from the airport, a municipal prosecutor's office said in a statement.

After smashing the bus windows the suspects, who were accompanied by some 30 other unknown perpetrators, threw torches in it, causing a fire that was extinguished by firefighters, it said.

The suspects, who have been held in detention, were charged for "endangering lives and property due to hatred," the prosecutor's office said.

Today was a disgrace... by both the team and the fans (at the end) ... 3 running on the pitch and then the charge of hooligans down the stairs. 4 of us went to the game today, me ... 2 mates (both 14) and my father... On the way out about 3 thugs went hurtling down the stairs knocking my dad down, then once we got out of the ground they all started fighting and colliding with the Noblot. We went astray from the fighting walking through the bolton fans when two bolton fans tried to attack the two 14 year old lads that i was with, headbuts and punches being thrown.

I dont mind the fans fighting but it shouldnt be around the ground where kids and elderly are, i dont have a problem if it is seperate from the football.

spot on, the fans were ridiculous at the end of the match with missiles being thrown inside the stadium, fighting outside and my granddad (aged 69) almost crushed by a horse due to some scumbag!!

There was a group of people drinking who were sat in es4 at the bottom, as soon as the match ended, they couldn't wait to get down stadium way and fight.

Scuffles broke out in the evening at Novara, a few minutes into the between the local team and Torino. Several hundred fans from torin, arrived at the stadium 'Silvio Piola' without a ticket, have attempted to enter too - and some of them we managed cone - forcing the entrance of the stand reserved for visiting supporters. The ultras have shoved the steward of the service order and were then charged by the police. Earlier they had launched some fireworks against the agents. Early in the game situation at the stadium 'Silvio Piola' is back to normal: the 50 ultras grenade that had managed to enter the plant have been rejected by the police and they are required now under control. The other - more than 400 - were outside the stadium.

Shakhtar fans arrested for fighting

Seven Shakhtar Donetsk fans were arrested following Wednesday's Champions League victory over Roma at the Stadio Olimpico for fighting amongst themselves.

Carabinieri federal police intervened after a mass drunken brawl broke out between two different groups of the Ukrainian club's fans, Ansa reported.
All those arrested were aged between 19 and 37 while some fans involved in the fighting were treated for minor injuries.

Three PSV fans arrested for trouble in Lille

Three PSV Eindhoven fans were taken into police custody after trouble in Lille city centre before Thursday's Europa League game, police sources said on Friday.
Around 150 drunk Dutch fans clashed with police before the 2-2 draw and after they were dispersed using teargas, smaller groups formed and broke furniture, wrecked cafe terraces and threw bottles at shop windows.

There were no reports of injuries.

Both mobs joined together at 3.30pm in the city center.
Contact was taken by leaders from Charleroi and Lille.
Lille lads said they'll take the road at 7pm.
We waited but at 6pm tension was high with police and then it was intifada. We fought with policemen but we retreated as they used flash balls and tear gas.
We mobbed up in a pub but police charged us and our mob is now totally splitted.

We mobbed up with only small mobs of 20/30 lads everywhere in the city (really hard as we don't know the city).
When a mob of 25 Charleroi and 20 PSv'ers used a big avenue, we fronted a large mob mob of Bruges and Lille lads, maybe 140 (?).
Of course they took the upper hand but 10/15 away lads tried to fought back. A few punches were exchanged but police intervened.

Dutch splitted again, charged by coppers.
So we (Charleroi) re-grouped with 5/6 Dutch near a LOSC shop in the city.
We saw a mob of 30 Lille/Bruges (we supposed they were also splitted by cops) and a good fight took place for 2 minutes. Away mob took the advantage

Then, police reacted again and pepper sprayed everyone and used flash balls. About 10 Charleroi lads were arrested.

A real big tension with cops everywhere so we came back to our cars and decided to camel back one day later to pick up arrested guys.

Oxford United football fans sentenced for violent brawl at Cheltenham pub - 18/02/2011

A group of Oxford football fans have been given custodial sentences for their involvement in a violent disorder at a Cheltenham pub in 2009.

At around 5.20pm on Saturday February 7 2009, Gloucestershire Police were called to reports of the disorder, involving the group of football supporters, at the Moon Under the Water public house on Bath Road.

The Oxford United fans had visited the pub after the Oxford United match against Kettering at Wellingborough was postponed due to bad weather.

Bottles, glasses and items of furniture were thrown in the disorder causing more than £5000 worth of damage and one local man, a bystander, suffered a broken jaw in the incident.

Fourteen Oxford United fans were arrested and charged with a public order offence.

During today’s sentencing at Bristol Crown Court Judge Martin Picton commended Gloucestershire Police Detective Sergeant Steve Edwards, Police Constable Pete Bennett and prosecutor for the Crown Julian Kesner for their excellent investigation and preparation of this case.

Lee Arnold, 25, of Woodfarm Road, Headington had pleaded guilty to committing violent disorder. He was sentenced to a nine month suspended custodial sentence, a supervision order, 120 hours of community service, a six month curfew from 9pm to 5am except for Saturdays which is 2pm until 1am. He was also ordered to pay £600 in compensation to Wetherspoons and £670 in costs.

Tommy Bielec, 27, of Netherwoods Road, Headington, had pleaded guilty to committing violent disorder. He was sentenced to a 12 month suspended custodial sentence and 280 hours of community service. He was also ordered to pay £600 in compensation to Wetherspoons and £2500 in costs.

Sean Bone, 30, of Owens Way, Cowley, had pleaded guilty to committing violent disorder. He was sentenced to a 12 month suspended custodial sentence, 180 hours of community service and a six month curfew from 9pm to 5am except for Saturdays which is 2pm until 1am. He was also ordered to pay £600 in compensation to Wetherspoons and £1000 in costs.

Dale Bowman, 37, of Compton Dr, Abington denied committing violent disorder but was found guilty after a trial at Gloucester Crown Court. He has been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment.

Tristan Hayle, 25, of Cedar Road, Botley, had denied committing violent disorder at a hearing in May but changed his plea. He was formally found guilty by the jury on the judge’s direction and discharged to await today’s sentence. He was sentenced to a 12 month suspended custodial sentence, 150 hours of community service and will have to pay £600 in compensation to Wetherspoons and £3600 costs.

Sean Keaney, 19, of Outram Road, Cowley, had pleaded guilty to committing violent disorder. He was sentenced to a six month sentence, to be served consecutively with a current sentence.

Andrew McMahon, 20 of Fernhill Road, Cowley, had pleaded guilty to committing violent disorder. He was sentenced to 14 months imprisonment.

Aiden McMahon, 29, of Boswell Road, Oxford, had pleaded guilty to committing violent disorder. He was sentenced to a 12 month suspended custodial sentence, 200 hours of community service and a six month curfew from 9pm to 5am except for Saturdays which is 2pm until 1am. He will also have to pay £600 in compensation to Wetherspoons and £3600 costs.

Benjamin Sabbitini-Oliver, 28, of Botley Road, Oxford, had pleaded guilty to committing violent disorder. He was sentenced to a 12 month suspended custodial sentenced, 200 hours of community and a six month curfew from 9pm to 5am except for Saturdays which is 2pm until 1am. He was also ordered to pay £600 in compensation to Wetherspoons and £670 in costs.

Jeremy Smith, 37, of Galleyfield, Abingdon, had pleaded guilty to committing violent disorder. He was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment.

Paul Southey, also known as Blair, 29, of Campion Road, Abingdon had been charged with violent disorder and causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He was sentenced to a 32 month custodial sentenced to be served consecutively with a current sentence for a previous offence.

Alan Stimpson, 38, of Teal Close, Oxford, had pleaded guilty to committing violent disorder. He was sentenced to a 12 month suspended custodial sentence, 200 hours of community service and a six month curfew from 9pm to 5am except for Saturdays which is 2pm until 1am. He was also ordered to pay £600 in compensation to Wetherspoons and £670 in costs.

Christopher Waine, 36, of Pimpernell Close, Oxford, had pleaded guilty to committing violent disorder. He was sentenced to a 12 month suspended custodial sentence, 180 hours of community service and a six month curfew from 9pm to 5am except for Saturdays which is 2pm until 1am. He was also ordered to pay £600 in compensation to Wetherspoons and £670 in costs.

Christopher Williams, 35, of Spruce Gardens, Oxford denied committing violent disorder but was found guilty after a trial at Gloucester Crown Court. He has been sentenced to 20 months imprisonment.

Three Gloucestershire men, who had been drinking in the pub, were also arrested after they became involved in the altercation. They were also sentenced today.

Robert Hoskins, 40, of Badminton Road, Matson, Gloucester had pleaded guilty to committing violent disorder. He was sentenced to 14 months imprisonment.

Daniel McCauley, 35, of Orchard Way, Cheltenham had pleaded guilty to committing violent disorder. He was sentenced to 13 months imprisonment.

Richard Hamilton, 38, of Gloucester Road, Cheltenham had pleaded guilty to committing violent disorder. He was sentenced to 13 months imprisonment.

Peru : Football stadium stands collapse, injuring 117 - 18/02/2011

Police in Peru say the metal bleachers at a football stadium have collapsed right before a youth championship, injuring 117 people. A dozen fans suffered serious injuries.

Lima Fire Chief Alfonso Panizo tells RPP radio most of those hurt have minor injuries, but he says 12 seriously injured people have been hospitalized. He says there are no fatalities.

More than 80 firefighters pulled people from the seats after they collapsed Friday. Firefighters estimate more than 500 people were in the stands. The cause of the collapse is still under investigation.

Before the match the camera panned into the stands, where a small fracas between supporters was breaking out. Then, almost unbelievably, two fans in the middle of the screen suddenly whipped out pistols, with one pointing his gun straight at another fan while the second held his weapon high in the air.

Tensions escalated as the fan with his gun in the air crazily pulled the trigger. The bullet flew upwards and didn't seem to injure anyone, but the previously angry crowd all took a step backwards.

Three football fans were sentenced for between three and six months in jail yesterday for their role in violence that broke out after an AEK-AEL match in November 2008 which left one policeman injured.

In a sign that courts are starting to take growing football hooliganism more seriously, yesterday’s sentencing at Limassol District Court is the first time that a court has handed down a jail sentence for football hooliganism that has not been suspended.

Two of the men aged 25 and 27, from Limassol, were sentenced to six months in prison, while the 33-year-old also from Limassol was sentenced to three months as he played a lesser role in the violence. All three of them are AEL fans.

They were accused of stopping the match from running smoothly, unlawful assembly and rioting after losing the match, as well as blocking and attacking police, the use of dangerous objects and causing extensive damage to the stadium.

In the aftermath of the game a MMAD sergeant (Mobile Rapid Reaction Unit) was seriously injured, after being hit with a fire extinguisher. The physiotherapy room of the stadium was also damaged and a large number of seats were set on fire in the stands.

According to police reports, the court held that for all three fans, there were no mitigating circumstances and the sentences imposed on them are, for the first time, without suspension.

Larnaca District court imposed a three month jail sentence on two young men from Limassol, a few months ago, for similar incidents.

Garry Mann to be returned to UK to finish sentence - 17/02/2011

An England football fan jailed in Portugal for his role in a riot during Euro 2004 is to be transferred to a UK prison to serve out his sentence.

Garry Mann, a former firefighter from Kent, was extradited last May after losing a six-year court battle against being sent back to Portugal.

Mann, 53, denies being involved in the fight and claims he did not receive a fair trial in Albufeira.

He will serve the rest of his two-year sentence in a British jail.

Fair Trials International said the transfer application had been accepted in principle but no date had yet been set.

The Birmingham City supporter was drinking with friends in a bar in Albufeira when a riot involving football fans began in a nearby street.

He was arrested, tried and convicted within 48 hours.

Mann's MP Hugh Robertson asked Foreign Secretary William Hague to look into the case, saying the conviction was unsafe.

Mr Robertson tried to make a last-ditch appeal for government help over the extradition, but failed to get through to anyone at the Foreign Office.

Cisse ready to quit Greek football after derby loss

Panathinaikos striker Djibril Cisse has suggested that he will leave Greece this summer after his team were beaten 2-1 by fierce rival Olympiakos on Saturday in a controversial game that ended with the Frenchman and some of his teammates being attacked by Reds fans.

The Greens were enraged by sevearl refereeing decisions they felt denied them victory at the Karaiskakis Stadium and a chance of retaining the Super League title they won last season.

Cisse he told journalists after the game that he has lost his patience with questionable refereeing in Greece.

“I will make my decisions but believe me, I’ve had it up to here,” he said. “Make the most of being able to see me because these are my last months in Greece because I can’t go on under these conditions.”

There are still seven games to go in the Super League but with Panathinaikos 10 points behind Olympiakos after Saturday’s defeat, there is little chance of the Greens catching the Piraeus club.

Cisse suggested that Panathinaikos should have won the derby and were only denied by the referee Dimitris Kalopoulos’s decision to disallow what seemed a legitimate Panathinaikos goal for offside and to allow a questionable Olympiakos goal in the 91st minute to stand.

“We should have won today’s game but there was one person who decided that we shouldn’t,” said the Super League’s top scorer.

His Brazilian teammate, Gilberto Silva, labelled the referee’s performance a “disgrace” and, like Cisse, suggested that Olympiakos is consistently favoured by match officials.

“For the sake of Greek sport, I hope this situation changes soon,” said the former Arsenal player.

The controversial decisions and the late manner of Olympiakos’s victory – Rafik Djebbour scored the winner in the first minute of injury time – meant that the pre-match peace, aided by a heavy police presence, was shattered as soon as the game ended.

Dozens of Olympiakos fans invaded the pitch and, amid the celebrations, several of them aimed kicks and punches at Panathinaikos players. There were also reports of a confrontation between some Greens players and Olympiakos captain Vassilis Torosidis, who was sent off in the closing stages for headbutting PAO’s Sebastian Leto.

Cisse reportedly exchanged angry words with Olympiakos owner Vangelis Marinakis in the changing rooms. The shipping tycoon hinted at the incident in his post-match statement.

“I didn’t see Cisse suffering, I saw him saying that he wanted to leave Greece,” said Marinakis, who then made reference to the fact that the Frenchman had appeared at a function earlier in the week wearing a skirt.

“If he wants to leave, without his skirts and blouses, let him go.”

The Olympiakos owner also rejected Panathinaikos’s complaints about the referee’s decisions and denied suggestions that opposition players had been attacked.

“Our fans came onto the pitch to celebrate,” he said. “It’s logical that when a team is 10 points ahead in the league and beats Panathinaikos in this way.

“I didn’t see anyone hit a Panathinaikos player. If I see this [in video footage] later, I will condemn it. What matters, though, is that the best team is going to win the championship, the rest is just small talk.”

The Olympiakos owner’s words are unlikely to be the last following one of the most controversial derby matches of recent times in Greek football.

Crowd trouble overshadows Chorley game

Five people were arrested after crowd trouble overshadowed Chorley FC’s biggest game in 15 years on Saturday.[/

A crowd of 3,223 crammed into Victory Park for the top-of-the-table match with Chester City.

However extra police had to be drafted in after some ugly scenes before the match involving a small section of rival fans.

They pulled down fencing that had been erected to segregate the Chorley and Chester supporters.

After the game - which Chester won 1-0 - opposing supporters ran on to the pitch and there were reports of violent skirmishes outside the ground.

Police and officials at the club say the vast majority of the bumper crowd were well behaved but were let down by a small number of so-called supporters hell-bent on causing trouble.

Around 50 officers were involved in the police operation to maintain order.

Supt Richard Robertshaw said: “I am disappointed and saddened by the behaviour of a small minority of ‘fans’ who attended the match on Saturday afternoon.

“It was clear that some individuals from both Chorley and Chester were intent on causing trouble in the ground.”

The trouble erupted despite a massive operation by the Chorley FC, that saw an extra 37 match-day stewards drafted in.

After the game life-long Chorley fan Mark Locke wrote on the club’s website: “The actions of the so called ‘supporters’ will no doubt be aired in the coming days.

“Here and now is not the time to go into detail, other than to say they have brought shame on the club and should be banned for life from entering Victory Park.

“Many of the people involved have no doubt not even stepped foot into the ground for years, if ever.”

He added of the Chorley troublemakers: “We are ashamed and embarrassed of their behaviour and of the fact that they claim to support our club.”

Four fans were arrested by police on Saturday as Roma 'Ultras' protested against their team's poor recent form.

Fans threw bangers and flares outside the club's Trigoria training complex while police responded with tear gas.

One fan was arrested for throwing a banger and another for striking a policeman on the calf, according to Italian media reports.

Around 200 fans were involved in the demonstration and also chanted slogans against the team.

Roma have lost three matches in a row and risk seeing their season descend into disappointment.

They are eighth in Serie A after successive defeats to fellow title rivals Inter Milan and Napoli, all but ruling them out of the scudetto picture.

And they followed that up in midweek with a 3-2 defeat at home to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League, putting them on the brink of elimination from that competition as well.

Coach Claudio Ranieri said he could understand the fans' frustrations but urged them to protest in the right way.

"I would like a peaceful protest, it's right to complain about us, we've been doing badly for two weeks with three defeats in a row," he said.

"It's a demonstration of love from fans who want to understand why we've buckled.

"My reply is that we're playing badly, as we did against Napoli, but against Inter and Brescia we were penalised by certain episodes that are also an indication that things aren't going for us this season.

"And also against Shakhtar our advantage lasted only 45 seconds, their goal came from a double deflection, and from our own simple-mindedness they scored from three chances that were more unique than rare.

"Two weeks ago we progressed in the Italian Cup in Turin (against Juventus) as heroes, now we haven't suddenly become dummies.

"We have problems with our balance, we're not managing to make up for the use of three forwards in other areas of the pitch and against certain teams we're playing badly, but that's for me to find the solution."

But Ranieri remains defiant over his own future.

"I'm not leaving before the end of the season. I like challenges, I have a serene dressing room that is strong and determined and a team that, like me, still believes in the Champions League.

"As for next year keep calm, there's an owner who is selling the club, a bank which is mediating, a buyer who has yet to arrive, (you're) trying to put the cart before the ox.

Football fans are being reminded about a high-profile police operation ahead of the Premier League's first Black Country derby.

West Bromwich Albion play Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Hawthorn's at midday.

Potential troublemakers have been warned not to use the game as an excuse for causing problems.

West Midlands Police said there would be a high-profile police presence inside and outside the ground and they had been been working with both clubs.

Supt Manjit Thandi, who is heading the police operation, said: "We expect the majority of fans will relish the occasion in the best tradition of these two clubs, but we are prepared to deal with the minority who may see it as an opportunity to cause trouble.

"Our message to this minority is that we have always taken a robust stance against football disorder to ensure that genuine supporters have an enjoyable day and residents of West Bromwich experience the minimum of disruption.

"Any anti-social behaviour or public disorder will not be tolerated.

"We aim to prevent the minority who might cause trouble from spoiling things for the majority of law-abiding fans."

Fans of the Sussex club posted the video on YouTube to mark their upcoming FA Cup clash at Old Trafford, with singer Mike Dobie performing a Crawley v Manchester United-themed version of The Specials' 1980s hit 'A Message to Rudy'. Proceeds from the song are to be donated to a children's hospice.

But nobody involved in making the video noticed the plane crash gestures being made by one of the fans, who repeatedly put his arms out to mime an aeroplane before making explosion gestures with his hands.

The video was filmed two days after the 53rd anniversary of the disaster, in which 23 of the 44 passengers died - including eight members of the United team returning from a European Cup match against Red Star Belgrade.

"The first we knew was when we took a call from a Manchester United supporter saying it was disgusting," Crawley Town chief executive Alan Williams told The Guardian.

"We immediately pulled it off the website and removed it from YouTube. We have identified the idiot responsible and banned him from the club for life.

"He's not welcome here now or ever again. This should be an unbelievable week for us, playing the biggest club there is, and if anyone thinks Crawley would deliberately insult Manchester United over something so sensitive, that is what gets to me more than anything."

Sussex Police later confirmed that they had arrested the fan, who would not be permitted to travel to Manchester for the match on Saturday.

"A 19-year-old man was last night arrested by police in Crawley following complaints about the content of a music video produced to support Crawley Town Football Club in its FA Cup run," a spokesman said.

"The man from Crawley was arrested under the Public Order Act on suspicion of causing harassment, alarm or distress and has been bailed until 25 February pending further inquiries.

"As part of his bail conditions the man is not allowed to travel to Manchester for the Crawley Town Football Club match against Manchester United."

Smoke bomb thrown by Wolves fan after late West Brom equaliser

Ugly scenes at the final whistle marred the joyous celebrations among West Brom fans at the home side's 92nd-minute equaliser. A smoke bomb, which was smuggled into the ground inside a cuddly toy, was thrown by a Wolverhampton Wanderers supporter in the Smethwick End towards the Albion fans in the adjacent East Stand and seats were ripped out and used as missiles.

It is understood nobody was seriously injured but the Football Association is waiting for the report from its crowd control adviser before deciding what action to take. Wolves are working with police to try to identify the culprit.

EIGHT ARRESTED AFTER BLACK COUNTRY DERBY

Eight people were arrested following scuffles between rival fans on Sunday at the West Brom vs Wolves derby match.

The final whistle was greeted with volatile scenes as a smoke-emitting device was set off and a number of seats broken and thrown. Three members of the public were treated for minor injuries at the stadium.

Disorder was reported in several public houses away from the ground later in the day but the sporadic outbreaks of trouble were quickly dealt with by officers.

Eight arrests were made in total: two for attempted pitch invasion, five for public order offences and one for throwing a missile towards the playing area.

Investigations will continue to identify anybody else who may have been involved in disorder. West Midlands Police will pursue the use of Football Banning Orders to prevent those presenting a risk to the public from attending future football matches.

A West Midlands Police spokesman, said: "There was an atmosphere of enthusiastic and friendly competition between the vast majority of supporters at the match. However, there was some trouble immediately after the match and some pockets of disorder later in the day.

"A breakdown on the Metro at Black Lake caused a delay to some fans before the match; police officers escorted them safely to the stadium and they arrived mid-way into the first half."

A spokesman for West Brom football club added: "We would like to thank the vast majority of supporters inside the stadium for their good behaviour in creating a memorable derby atmosphere. Unfortunately, this has been overshadowed by the actions of a mindless few at the end of the game. The incident which has created most media coverage was the throwing of a smoke bomb from the away end towards the Millennium Corner of the East Stand. Our stewards seized upon it and disposed of it pitchside."
