Celtic Glasgow - Glasgow Rangers - 20/02/2011

Source : Eveningtimes.co.uk

Cells full as 300 held after Old Firm clash

More than 300 people were arrested after violence flared following Sunday’s Old Firm clash.

And police made so many arrests in the 12 hours after the game that they had to drive prisoners up to 50 miles because every cell in Glasgow was full.

In the worst incident, 10 police officers were taken to hospital after a mass brawl inside a bar.

Police described the scale of the violence as a nightmare following the first of three Celtic v Rangers matches in a month, with a fourth to be played in late April or early May.

Strathclyde Police Assistant Chief Constable Campbell Corrigan said he blamed excessive drinking for the surge in arrests.

He said: “By 6pm, almost every cell in our city centre divisions was full and, unfortunately, we are very used to this.

“Let’s be perfectly clear; we are not blaming the fans and the clubs for the levels of violence and disorder.

“However, it is clear we are left to mop up the consequences of people drinking to excess. Accident and emergencies were full across the force area. People were behaving outrageously and the public should not tolerate it.”

Police deploy more than 1000 officers on an Old Firm match day on the ground, on horseback and in the air.

And they needed every officer as incidents soared.

Domestic violence soared on Sunday by more than 80% – from a five-year Sunday average of 87 to 157 incidents.

A total of 230 people were arrested after the match for violence, disorder and anti- social behaviour, against a normal Sunday average of 182.

A further 51 were held for domestic abuse incidents – three times that of an average Sunday.

A total of 23 arrests were made at Celtic Park during the match, which the home side won 3-0.

Of those arrests, 16 were for sectarian breach of the peace.

In the most violent incident, 10 police officers were injured during a mass brawl at the Rowallan Bar, Thornliebank, East Renfrewshire.

It is understood two officers went into the bar trying to trace a man, but violence erupted.

The officers had to call for back-up and, within minutes, were joined by reinforcements.

Six men were arrested and appeared in private at Glasgow Sheriff Court yesterday.

Millwall FC - Middlesbrough - 20/02/2011

Referee wanted to halt Middlesbrough's game at Millwall

Season 10/11 - February - Page 4 5134177426

Middlesbrough's 3-2 win at Millwall was almost called off when objects were thrown from the home crowd at the Den.

Boro manager Tony Mowbray revealed: "The referee wanted to bring the teams off but both managers didn't think it was the right decision."

Missiles were thrown at the linesman and at visiting keeper Luke Steele when Scott McDonald put his side 2-1 up.

Millwall boss Kenny Jackett said: "I'm not condoning it, but I do like the passion and enthusiasm."

Millwall led through Neil Harris's first-half volley but were pegged back by Tony McMahon's free-kick before McDonald's disputed strike on 62 minutes.

Play was held up for several minutes as referee Chris Sarginson went to the dugouts to speak to both managers.

Jackett added: "I didn't think it would have been the right decision [to stop the game] but I told the ref to ask the Boro' keeper. We felt that things would settle down, which they did.

"From our fans' points of view, perhaps they felt aggrieved at one or two decisions which didn't go their way.

"And some of the decisions we've had lately have been tough."

Mowbray said: "What I'd say as the opposing manager is that what an asset it is to have that intensity and noise from the stands every week, but you overstep the mark when objects start coming on the pitch."

The victory moved Middlesbrough seven points clear of the relegation zone, while it was Millwall's first home defeat since early November as their challenge for a play-off place faltered, leaving them in ninth position.

Middlesbrough clinch the points as Millwall game almost abandoned

Middlesbrough's visit to Millwall came close to being abandoned after missiles were thrown onto the New Den pitch by the home fans.

Referee Chris Sarginson asked Lions boss Kenny Jackett and Boro counterpart Tony Mowbray whether the game should continue, but both manager's were against the idea with the visitor's 2-1 ahead.

Jackett defended his club's supporters after an eventual late strike condemned them to a 3-2 defeat: "I didn't think it would have been the right decision but told the ref to ask the Boro keeper. We felt that things would settle down, which they did.

"From our fans' points of view, there was some fantastic passion there and perhaps they felt aggrieved at one or two decisions which didn't go their way.

"I'm not condoning it but I do like the passion and enthusiasm. And some of the decisions we've had lately have been tough."

Mowbray shared his opposite number's view, adding: "The referee wanted to bring the teams off but both managers didn't think it was the right decision and in hindsight it was the correct decision to finish.

"What I'd say as the opposing manager is that what an asset it is to have that intensity and noise from the stands every week, but you overstep the mark when objects start coming on the pitch."

He singled out Merouane Zemmama for praise after the substitute set up two of the Teessiders' goals.

Mowbray added: "He was a bit of class. He's a Moroccan international and I signed him for Hibernian five years ago.

"He's matured into a man but he was a boy then, although he's always had fantastic technical ability.

"For (Scott) McDonald's goal, having that extra bit of quality to thread the pass through was what was required."

Jackett was disappointed with his team's defending as their play-off hopes suffered a setback.

The Lions boss added: "In many ways there were a lot of good things from us. There was a good spirit. We could have been more than one goal up at half-time and played very well.

"In the second half I felt at times that Middlesbrough showed their quality but I was disappointed with the way we conceded some of our goals. Conceding three goals always gives you a mountain to climb.

"Conceding the three goals was our undoing and if you expect to collect points on a regular basis, particularly at home, then that's going to be difficult - but I didn't think we got the best of the referee's decisions."

Millwall 2 Middlesbrough 3: Millwall 2 Middlesbrough 3: Bottle-throwing yobs cause mayhem at The Den

Bottle-throwing yobs almost forced Millwall's game against Middlesbrough to be abandoned. The game at The Den was held up in the second half and referee ChrisSarginson judged the behaviour of home fans to be dangerous after alinesman and visiting goalkeeper Luke Steele were targeted. Hold Up: Referee Sarginson talks to Jackett and Mowbray as a steward clears bottles off the pitch 'He was taking the players off, he'd had enough,' said Middlesbroughboss Tony Mowbray, who with Millwall's Kenny Jackett managed topersuade the officials to continue. 'He'd seen four or five bottles come on and he thought enough was enough.' A crowd of 11,871 were at the game which dented play-off hopes and their reputation. The club have worked hard to eradicate the hooligan element fromtheir support but this revived memories of when crowd trouble was aproblem. Mowbray added: 'What I said to the referee was that we have to getthe game finished. It would have been different if someone had beenhurt. The noise and ferocity coming from the stands was unbelievableand it's a great credit to our players that we saw it out and won. Itwas pretty draining for us all - staff, players and I'm sure for thesupporters.' Flashpoint: Stewards stand between the fans and the linesman Neil Harris volleyed opener - his first in the League this season - but it was cancelled by Tony McMahon's thumping shot after the break and the trouble flared after Scott McDonald gave Boro the lead in the 62nd minute. However, both managers convinced Sarginson the game should continue and after Hameur Bouazza had pulled Millwall level with a fine free-kick, Leroy Lita headed in Boro's winner from close range. Jackett said: 'I didn't think it would be the right decision (to abandon the game) but told the ref to ask the Boro keeper. We felt that things would settle down, which they did. 'From our fans' points of view, there was some fantastic passion there and perhaps they felt aggrieved at one or two decisions which didn't go their way. I'm not condoning it but I like the passion and enthusiasm.'

Spurs hooligans jailed for organised fight with West Ham thugs - 15/02/2011

Source : Tottenhamjournal.co.uk

FOOTBALL thugs including a Spurs “General” have been caged for a total of six years over an organised brawl after a Premiership match.

The men joined a surge of up to 60 troublemakers following the Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham fixture at Upton Park in 2009.

Violence errupted near the ground on August 23 after Spurs won 2-1, Inner London Crown Court heard.

Spurs “General” Kieran Colletta, 44, and Simon Howlett, 47, rounded up yobs to confront a Hammers gang who were armed with bottles and glasses on Mile End Road, led by Anthony Caton, 43.

Craig Molski, 32, ran up and down behind the police line trying to get at West Ham fans.

Bottles flew and smashed on CCTV cameras and Colletta, of Dimsdale Drive, Enfield, could “clearly be seen” hurling one at rivals. David Lamb, 41, made provocative gestures at West Ham enemies.

Ringleaders arranged the clash at a summit meeting near a pub shortly beforehand. Innocent passers-by were forced to dash for cover, and police feared the situation “would spiral out of control” as they were outnumbered.

The five men, who all have various previous convictions, all denied affray but were found guilty by a jury.

Jailing them today, Tuesday, February 15, Judge Robert Fraser said: “There’s no doubt that football violence is a scourge on the sport.”

He said the “serious affray” had put police in an “exceedingly difficult and dangerous position,” adding: “Both the police and the public were clearly put in the centre of the threats and violence that resulted.

“Each of you played a different part in the affray, but you all quite obviously participated and contributed to it.”

Colletta, who said he was “embarrassed and ashamed” about his role in the brawl, was jailed for two years for “leading and organising the Spurs group”.

He had four convictions between 1982 and 1990 for blackmail, possessing stolen goods, possession of an offensive weapon and obstructing a police officer.

His lawyer Keiran Moroney said: “Perhaps this disorder would have happened whether he was there or not, and he has been singled out in various ways.

“He had lived an honest life, outside of his involvement with Tottenham Hotspur and football violence.”

Judge Fraser acknowledged Colletta’s sentence would have “tragic” consequences for his family, but said: “It is your actions that have put you in this position, and I am afraid they are going to have to suffer the consequences.”

Howlett received a reduced sentence of eight months after the court heard he was the sole carer for his two children aged 14 and 12, one of whom is physically disabled.

Molksi, formerly of Flower Lane, Mill Hill, was jailed for 10 months, while Lamb, of Kerrison Road, Wandsworth, got eight months.

West Ham’s “organiser” Caton, of Paul Street, Hackney, was jailed for 22 months.

All were banned from attending football matches involving their team for six years, and from travelling to major football tournaments abroad.

A sixth man admitted affray and will be sentenced on March 4 while reports are undertaken.

Wanted: Five more derby day suspects - 22/02/2011

Source : http://www.shieldsgazette.com/news/local-news/wanted_five_more_derby_day_suspects_1_3103315

Season 10/11 - February - Page 4 484312233

THESE are the faces of five more suspected football hooligans who police want to find after disorder at last month’s Wear-Tyne derby.

The latest rogues’ gallery follows the publication last week of the pictures of eight men who police believe were involved in trouble at the Sunderland versus Newcastle match at the Stadium of Light.

As a result of that appeal, four of the men pictured last week have been identified, arrested, and are currently on police bail.

Now the specialist post-match enquiry team has issued five new pictures of fans they believe could help with their enquiries into incidents which happened inside and outside the ground on January 16.

Ugly scenes broke out after Sunderland’s last-minute equaliser, with rival fans throwing seats at each other. One fan was arrested after running onto the pitch and pushing Newcastle goalkeeper Steve Harper.

Chief Superintendent Rachel Kearton, Sunderland Area Commander, said: “We will always act on information we receive from the public and their help is invaluable.

“Most football supporters want to come to the match and enjoy their day in an environment free from violence or disorder. Genuine fans can help us weed out the small minority who are there to cause trouble.

“I’d ask anyone who recognises the men in these photographs to contact us as soon as possible.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 03456 043043 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Police describe 'nightmare' night as 300 are arrested after Celtic v Rangers clash - 24/02/2011

Source : Theglaswegian.co.uk

MORE than 300 arrests were made in a wave of violence that followed Sunday's Old Firm clash.

At one point, police had to drive prisoners up to 50 miles because every cell in Glasgow was full.

The worst incident saw 10 police officers taken to hospital after a mass brawl inside a bar in the city's south side.

Police described the scale of the violence as a nightmare.

Strathclyde's Assistant Chief Constable Campbell Corrigan said he blamed excessive drinking for the surge in arrests.

He added: "By 6pm, almost every cell in our city centre divisions was full and, unfortunately, we're very used to this. Let's be perfectly clear, we are not blaming the fans and the clubs for the levels of violence and disorder.

"However, it's clear we are left to mop up the consequences of people drinking to excess.

"Accident and emergencies were full across the force area."

Domestic violence also soared by more than 80 per cent on the day of the match - from a Sunday average of 87 to 157 incidents.

A total of 230 people were arrested af ter the match for violence, disorder and anti-social behaviour, compared with a Sunday average of 182.

A further 51 were held for domestic abuse incidents. Thirtynine arrests were made at Celtic Park during the match, which the home side won 3-0. Of those arrests, 16 were for sectarian breach of the peace.

Ten police officers were injured during a brawl at the Rowallan Bar in Thornliebank.

A source said: "Two officers walked into the bar in a bid to trace a man but all hell broke loose.

"The cops managed to activate their emergency button and, within minutes, they were joined by reinforcements."

Six men were arrested and were due in court on Monday.

Celtic and Rangers will play each other three more times this season. They meet again in the Scottish Cup replay at Parkhead on March 2.

Chester FC: Blues seek answers from Lancashire Police after Chorley trouble - 24/02/2011

Source : Chester Chronicle

CHESTER FC have begun an inquest into the serious crowd trouble which left children, women and pensioners running for cover after Saturday’s match at Chorley.

Blues officials will write to Lancashire Constabulary to ask why such an eagerly-anticipated fixture turned so sour, with Chester’s superb 1-0 victory overshadowed by violence in and around Victory Park.

The most serious incident occurred shortly after the final whistle when visiting fans claim they were directed by police to turn into a park adjacent to the stadium – where they were attacked by a mob chanting ‘Chorley’.

There has been widespread criticism from supporters of the police’s handling of the all-ticket fixture, which attracted 1,200 Chester followers in a crowd of 3,223.

Blues general manager Pat Cluskey said: “I’m compiling a letter on behalf of the board to Lancashire Constabulary asking for their observations.

“We’ll be asking why there was no police presence in the ground before kick-off and why fans were seemingly sent the wrong way as they left the ground.”

Chorley FC chairman Ken Wright was ‘sickened’ by the trouble but said he thought the police’s handling of the day was ‘brilliant’.

Alan Allcock, operations manager for the Evo-Stik League, told The Chronicle that the FA would be writing to both clubs for their views on the violence, because it was mentioned in the referee’s report. Any subsequent action will be handled by the FA, rather than the Evo-Stik League.

Trouble began shortly before kick-off when supporters from both sides tore down barriers which had been placed near the halfway line to segregate rival fans.

Police and stewards restored order but there were more problems at the final whistle when a group of about 100 fans from the Chorley section invaded the pitch.

They were cleared from the ground but, minutes later, Blues fans were subjected to a frenzied attack from a mob of Chorley supporters as they tried to make their way from the stadium to the safety of their cars and coaches.

Police have charged a number of people in relation to the violent scenes.

Peter Collinson, 46, of Lavender Grove, Chorley, and David Hagan, 29, Hallwood Road, Chorley, have both been charged with section four public order offences.

Lewis Hook-Dale, 37, of Kirkstall Drive, in Chorley has been charged with section four public order and causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

All three were bailed to appear at Chorley Magistrates’ Court on March 9.

A 25-year-old man from Chester was given a fixed penalty notice for disorder while a boy, 16, from Chester was given a reprimand for using threatening words and behaviour.

Chester have said they will ban any Blues supporter convicted of an offence relating to the match.

Drunken Swansea City fan threw vodka bottle at Bristol City crowd - 25/02/2011

Source : Thisissouthwales.co.uk

A SWANSEA City fan who threw a glass bottle into a crowd of Bristol City supporters at Ashton Gate stadium has been banned from attending football matches for the next three years.

Michael Bohn, 20, who was drunk at the time, threw the empty vodka bottle into the crowd on his first trip out after becoming a father in December.

Bohn was caught after the bottle landed at the feet of a police officer.

Bohn, of Alban Road, Llanelli, admitted throwing the bottle and also pleaded guilty to being drunk while entering the ground on February 1 for a Championship match, which Swansea won 2-0.

May Li, prosecuting at Bristol Magistrates' Court, explained that at 9.30pm a uniformed police officer, who was standing among the Bristol City fans, saw a missile being thrown into the crowd.

"An empty glass vodka bottle landed at his feet," she said.

"The Bristol City fans became extremely aggressive about the missile being thrown and began moving towards the Swansea fans.

"Police managed to calm the crowd and were able to look on CCTV to find out who had thrown the bottle.

"Bohn was seen to be the one throwing the object.

"In interview he stated he had been drinking in a pub in Swansea earlier in the day where he had drunk three or four cans of Strongbow cider.

"On the coach to Bristol he said he then drunk seven or eight cans of Fosters lager.

"He said he felt drunk at the time of entering Ashton Gate, even though he knew it was illegal.

"While at the match another Swansea City fan offered him a swig from a vodka bottle.

"Once he had drunk from it he admitted throwing it into the Bristol City crowd.

"He said he knew what he was doing and that his actions were illegal."

The court heard Bohn had no convictions but had a caution for being drunk in a football ground in December 2008.

Robert Morgan-Jones, defending, said Bohn understood his actions could have caused much more serious charges to be brought against him if someone had been hurt.

"No one was injured and no direct problems actually arose from this incident, but he understands it could have been a lot worse," he said.

"He is a young man who did well at school and was involved in assisting others, especially with sporting activities.

"He now works hard as a machine operator and brings in a decent wage.

"The problem here is alcohol — he is a binge drinker and once he starts drinking he cannot stop.

"He is now getting help for his problem in the form of counselling and has the support of his parents.

"He became a father in December and this was the first time he had gone out since the baby being born, and he went overboard.

"He thoroughly regrets his action but is not one of those involved in organised football violence."

Bohn was given a football banning order, which means he cannot attend any regulated football match in the UK for the next three years.

He was also fined £265 and ordered to pay £85 costs plus a £15 victim surcharge.

Villarreal - Napoli - 24/02/2011

Napoli fans fall on the pitch after barrier gives way

Things started so well for Napoli in their Europa League game against Villarreal. Marek Hamsik gave them a 1-0 lead and then went to celebrate with his fans. Unfortunately, a small barrier at the front of the Napoli stand gave way and a cavalcade of fans fell onto the side of the pitch.

Thankfully no-one was hurt, but it’s a good reminder that, for the most part, the whole ‘health and safety gone mad’ stuff is just ‘health and safety’ stuff.

Platini threatens Serbia with ban due to hooligans - 25/02/2011

Source : AFP

UEFA chief Michel Platini warned Belgrade on Thursday its national squad and teams could be banned from international competitions if Serbia does not root out violence among football supporters.

At the meeting with Serbian President Boris Tadic, Platini said that should "violent and criminal behaviour by hooligans continue, Serbian teams and national squad will be excluded from all European competitions," said a statement from the presidency.

A Euro 2012 qualifier against Italy in Genoa last October was abandoned after just six minutes following crowd trouble, instigated by hardcore Serbian hooligans, who threw flares onto the pitch.

The hooligans then clashed with local police in a series of incidents that ended with 16 injured on both sides. Several Serbs were sentenced to prison terms, while others were expelled from Italy and banned from entering the country for five years.

"We are aware of the problems we have with hooligans in Serbia and we are ready for a final clash against them," Tadic said in a statement.

"We will work together with UEFA in order for the ugly incidents from Genoa not to happen ever again. This was a shame for our country," he added.

A rise of violence among hardcore football fans presents a serious challenge to Belgrade, harming its image and attempts to join the European Union.

In September 2009, a French football fan was brutally beaten here ahead of his team's match with Partizan Belgrade. He later died from his injuries, while the 12 hooligans received sentences for first degree murder of up to 35 years in prison in January.

The incident came as the first Gay Pride was to be held in Serbia, which was later cancelled due to fears of violence by hardcore football fans, mostly supporters of ultranationalist parties.

But a year later, hundreds of them clashed with police securing the 2010 Gay pride parade in Belgrade, in a series of violent attacks that left several dozen injured on both sides.

In a bid to root out hooliganism among football fans, the authorities amended the country's Criminal Law allowing a 30-day detention for suspects investigated for violent acts punishable with up to five years in prison.

Later on Thursday, Platini visited Croatia and told its President Ivo Josipovic that European football's governing body has given a year-long deadline to the former Yugoslav republic to "ensure that matchs be held without any violence by football supporters."

"If this is not ensured, Croatia's Football Federation is threatened to be excluded from UEFA," the statement from Josipovic's office quoted Platini as saying.

Josipovic said the Croatian government has prepared a "new law that should contribute to solving the problem" of violence among football supporters, the statement said.

He added he would demand that all state institutions ensure measures be taken "in order to put an end to violence at Croatia's stadiums."

Croatian hardcore football fans often clash with the police, especially when the main rival teams, Dinamo Zagreb and Hajduk Split, play the national league matches.

Birmingham City fans fined – and one banned – after invading pitch - 25/02/2011

Source : Birminghammail.net

THREE Birmingham City fans have been fined – and one of them also given a football ban – after they invaded the pitch as their team won the Carling Cup quarter-final match with Villa.

The game on December 1 was marred by violence both before and after as supporters clashed and an estimated £35,000 damage was caused to St Andrew’s football ground.

Birmingham Magistrates heard that bottles and broken seats were hurled and flares let off as 27 people were injured in the disturbance which lasted for three hours.

Ashley Gibbs, 18, of Henbury Drive, Chelmsley Wood, who admitted using threatening words and behaviour and going onto the pitch, was given a three-year order banning him from attending any league match, fined £230 and ordered to pay £145 costs.

Graham Deakin, 23, of Lower Queen Street, Sutton Coldfield, and Paul Napier, 49, of Linden Road, Bournville, both admitted going onto the pitch.

Deakin was fined £100 and Napier £215 and each were ordered to pay £145 costs.

Ebony Mitchell-Whyte, prosecuting, told city magistrates that before the match a group of Birmingham City fans tried to force their way into the area for the away supporters while stewards were also assaulted during the clashes.

She said that toilets were also demolished within the ground.

After the final whistle around 1,000 Blues fans invaded the pitch and ran towards the stand housing their rivals.

Afterwards, the violence continued outside the ground and in the surrounding area where windows were smashed and damage caused to two pubs in Digbeth.

Miss Michell-Whyte said that Gibbs had been caught on CCTV running onto the pitch and making obscene gestures towards the opposing supporters.

She said the defendant’s photograph was circulated in the media and he later handed himself in.

Gibbs was interviewed and said he had got “carried away” because his team won.

Deakin, who works as a carer, said that he had been celebrating the win while Napier admitted singing an obscene song.

Kelly Edwards, for Napier, a former marine, said he was an avid fan of Birmingham City who found himself on the pitch after his team scored the winning goal.

Vandalism, Violence Mar Bulgaria's Football Derby

Season 10/11 - February - Page 4 65214947

Wide-spread vandalism, violence and clashes between fans and police marred Bulgaria's eternal derby between the "CSKA" and "Levski" football clubs in Sofia Saturday night.

Three public transportation buses and two trolleys have been seriously damaged with broken seats and doors and holes punched in the ceilings.

A store window has been broken on the "Madrid" boulevard in downtown Sofia.

Police had to undertake extreme measures during half-time and removed by force the CSKA fans. Over one thousand police in full gear stormed sector "G" of the "Gerena" stadium (home of the "Levski" team) and pushed the CSKA fans out.

23 people have been arrested. Three police officers have been seriously injured, one of them is listed at the emergency "Pirogov" hospital, the Director of the Sofia Directorate of the Interior Ministry, Valeri Yordanov, informs.

The Head of the Directorate's Department for the Fight against Football Hooliganism, Anton Zlatanov, told the private TV channel bTV, there were way more policemen injured during the clashes, adding details and precise numbers are still examined and video cameras have taped the perpetrators.

A football fan, 25, is also listed in "Pirogov" with head and face injuries.

CSKA owner, Dimitar Borisov, says police acted accordingly and fans have not been subject to police violence, but pointed out those who had purchased tickets and have been peaceful should had been left to watch the game until the end.

Police storm CSKA fans as violence mars Sofia derby

Riot police stormed 3,500 CSKA Sofia fans at halftime of the Bulgarian capital's derby and marched them to the city centre after crowd trouble marred the 127th match between CSKA and rivals Levski on Saturday.

Hundreds of policemen, wearing helmets and using batons, entered the CSKA supporters' section at the Georgi Asparuhov Stadium and forced them to leave.

They escorted them to the city's downtown area, where there was further trouble after the match, with minor fighting and buses, cars and shops damaged.

Television footage showed several fans with serious wounds taken to hospital by ambulance. Several local media described one supporter's condition as life-threatening.

The match continued after the halftime interval with the CSKA fans' section empty. Both sides had a man sent off as CSKA won 3-1 to move up to fifth in the Bulgarian league.

The violence was amongst the worst in recent years at the "eternal derby", as matches between Levski and CSKA are known, and confirmed the worst fears of police, who wanted an earlier kickoff because tensions were running high beforehand.

"They (CSKA fans) broke all safety fences and there was a possibility of a pitch invasion," Sofia police chief inspector Anton Zlatanov told local radio.

"We had no choice (but to enter the CSKA section). They threw concrete and iron pieces, injuring several policemen." CSKA fans also pelted police with fireworks.

CSKA's national fan club chairman, Dimitar Angelov, told reporters: "We want to meet Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov.

"We respect the law and the Bulgarian police but it's not acceptable for 3,500 fans to be pushed outside the stadium because of the misconduct of two or three... Our fans broke a few seats because they're smeared with excrement."

FLAMBOYANT PROCESSIONS

Nearly 1,500 policemen were on duty for the game. Several hundred police and firemen packed the athletics track around the pitch more than an hour before kickoff.

Police also used horses, dogs and specialised equipment to tackle public order offenders.

Trouble began hours before the match with police making several arrests as the supporters of both teams made flamboyant processions through some of Sofia's main streets.

Violence continued outside the stadium as CSKA fans again clashed with police, who made more arrests.

CSKA's win was only their second at the Georgi Asparuhov stadium. Brazilian striker Michel Platini scored twice and defender Apostol Popov made it 3-0 midway through the second half. Levski's consolation was a Kostadin Stoyanov own goal.

The two teams finished with 10 men after Levski midfielder Hristo Yovov and CSKA winger Alexander Tonev were sent off with 20 minutes remaining.

CSKA have 29 points from 16 matches. Levski remain second on 32, five points behind leaders Litex Lovech.

Parents of murdered PSG fan appeal for witnesses - 25/02/2011

Source : Agence France-Presse

The parents of a Paris Saint-Germain supporter beaten to death by fans of the same club have used the one-year anniversary of his death to launch a new appeal for witnesses.

Yann Lorence, 37, was beaten up by fans from a rival fan group prior to PSG's league game against Marseille on February 28, 2010.

He died from his injuries a few days later.

Four men were arrested on suspicion of murder but were released on bail.

"On February 28, it will be one year since our son, Yann, fell beneath the blows of a group of so-called supporters," wrote Lorence's parents in an open letter seen by AFP on Friday.

"We will be in sorrow because, apart from the pain of having lost our child, it appears that some of the perpetrators of his murder have not yet been identified."

They added: "We are convinced that there are still witnesses to the attack on our son who have not made themselves known to the police."

Bulgarian police deny excessive force against CSKA fans - 27/02/2011

Source : Yahoo

Bulgarian police have denied using heavy-handed tactics by forcing 3,500 CSKA Sofia fans out of the stadium at halftime during the Bulgarian capital's derby on Saturday and marching them to the city centre.

Police said that 32 officers had been injured during and after crowd trouble at the Georgi Asparuhov stadium, home of CSKA's bitter rivals Levski .

"We'll not succumb to such provocations," Sofia police's chief Valeri Yordanov told a news conference on Sunday.

"CSKA fans' actions were pre-staged, some of them began break off concrete and iron pieces immediately after arriving at the stadium."

CSKA fans broke the safety fences and pelted police with fireworks and other objects during the first half of the match which CSKA won 3-1.

In response, hundreds of policemen, wearing helmets and using batons, stormed the CSKA supporters' section and forced them outside the ground.

Yordanov said that the fans' aggressive behavior and the possibility of pitch invasion prompted police to move in and charge the supporters with batons.

He also blamed the fans of violating a prior agreement between the two sides and police.

Nearly 1,500 policemen were on duty for the "eternal derby", as matches between Levski and CSKA are known in the Balkan country.

Police also used horses, dogs and specialised equipment to tackle public order offence.

Sofia police said earlier this week they met with the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) officials and suggested an earlier kickoff to prevent the game ending in the dark but the soccer authorities did not comply with the request.

"It was really serious, 32 policemen were injured during and after the match," said Yordanov, adding that police arrested 23 fans on Saturday but the number will increase as some of the offenders will be identified from video footage.

The fixture has a long history of crowd violence. A 30-year-old man was killed by a bomb in 2000 and hooliganism and arrests have been rife since.

CSKA fans accused the police of "exceeding their rights" and said they wanted a meeting with Bulgaria's Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov to discuss the incidents.

"We respect the law and the Bulgarian police but it's not acceptable for 3,500 fans to be pushed outside the stadium because of the misconduct of two or three," CSKA's national fan club chairman Dimitar Angelov said.

Sofia municipality said on Sunday that the BFU should introduce lunchtime kickoffs for matches between Levski and CSKA -- the most popular clubs in the country.

"I think this will limit the possibility of clashes and police will have better chance to cope with the situation," said Sofia deputy mayor Ivan Sotirov.
