Czech Republic - Denmark - 03/07/2021

Source : https://new.in-24.com/

Incident surrounding a rainbow flag before Czech Republic-Denmark, UEFA investigates

“UEFA has never instructed stewards in Baku, or any other stadium, to confiscate rainbow flags,” she said in a statement to AFP after this quarter-final of Euro football, won by Denmark (2-1).

“The first information we have is that the supporter in question was very intoxicated and that some local supporters started to be aggressive towards him. The local stewards intervened and allowed this supporter to remain (in the stand ), despite his condition, “added UEFA.

In photos released by AFP, we see two stewards surround two supporters in the Danish stand and grab the flag in question. One of the supporters has a mug in the colors of a brand of beer in his hand.

“We are investigating what happened,” added UEFA, adding that the flag was later returned to the Danish fan.

“The rainbow flag is a symbol which represents the core values of UEFA and promotes everything in which we believe,” insisted the organizing body of the Euro.

“Gross violation”

The Football Supporters Europe (FSE) network, for its part, confirmed that the flag had been returned “to its owners”, while denouncing the incident.

“To be clear, this is a gross violation of UEFA rules for the tournament,” the FSE network commented on Twitter, saying it was in touch with the relevant bodies to “clarify the situation”.

Cacophony of boos and cheers as England take the knee before kick-off as Ukraine stay on their feet

The England players were tonight greeted with a cacophony of boos, whistles and cheers as they took the knee before kick-off in the quarter finals of Euro 2020.

Ukraine stayed on their feet as England continued with the Black Lives Matter gesture ahead of the quarter final clash at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Some speculated online that the crowd could have been booing Ukraine for refusing to kneel, but boos have thundered from Three Lions fans at every game thus far, irrespective of whether or not the opposition has joined England in kneeling.

Reaction to the kneeling was as divided as ever, with some fans praising the players who they said did their country proud, while others said it had so infuriated them they were going to switch the game off and watch Netflix instead.

Lee Bee, who goes by 'Anti-woke Bloke', tweeted: 'Ukraine stand tall and proud - England booed as they take the knee.

'Netflix it is then!

'They were doing so well with the National Anthem - until they fucked it all up kneeling for racist BLM who hate white people/Police - I can't watch them until they stop the nonsense.'

But Lowri Ann, writing after England took an early lead, wrote: 'I have to give it to the England players, they get booed by their "fans" then give them goals like that. Embarrassing.'

Another user called Sly said: 'Big respect to England for continuing to take the knee.'

Two police officers injured after clashes with fans following England’s quarter-final victory

Three men were arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer, four on suspicion of violent disorder, one on suspicion of actual bodily harm and one on suspicion of drunk and disorderly behaviour. Image:
England beat Ukraine 4-0 in Rome to set up a semi-final against Denmark

Football News Deputy assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Jane Connors, said: “The Met has maintained a highly visible presence across London as people enjoy the Euros and celebrate England’s progression in the tournament.

“While a larger crowd gathered in Leicester Square this area was cleared by approximately 23:30hrs. Two officers were injured as this area was cleared and thankfully their injuries are not life-threatening. “I would also like to remind everyone that London remains in a public health crisis and we must all take action to stick to the rules in line with the government guidance.”

“We want people to be able to enjoy the Euros safely and securely. We will continue to have measures in place to keep the public safe, prevent crime and disorder and respond effectively to any incidents. “Last night following England’s match against Ukraine we saw a number of people take to the streets and I am pleased to say that this was all largely good-natured. Fans engaged positively with officers and they dispersed when asked.

England face Denmark in the semi-finals of Euro 2020 at Wembley on Wednesday, with the winners playing either Italy or Spain in the final next Sunday.

“FUCK UEFA!”: Fans steal EM banners in Munich and send messages

Apparently fans from Bayern Munich stole several advertising banners for the European Football Championship and sprayed them with graffiti. The message is clear.

In addition, several billboards for the European Championship were sprayed with graffiti. They now have messages like “Munich hates UEFA” Or, above all, “Fuck UEFA”. The police are investigating.

Tens of thousands of England fans have been pouring into the capital before the Euro 2020 final with Italy at Wembley stadium tonight.

Shocking videos are being shared which show hundreds of fans storming through metal barriers at Wembley Stadium as stewards and police struggle to maintain control.

Supporters have already been celebrating on top of a bus outside Wembley stadium, with more than a dozen jumping atop a single decker and forcing it to stop as they sang songs, set off flares and drank beer.

The windows of a Burger King have also been smashed by bottles thrown by fans in Leicester Square.

King's Cross station was evacuated earlier as England fans set off flares outside.

Supporters have been queuing for seats to watch the game in pubs from 6.45am, with lines stretching down the road at many.

London police arrest 49 after fans clash with officers, try to break into Wembley ahead of England vs Italy Euro 2020 final - 12/07/2021

Source : https://www.abc.net.au/

London police have taken 49 football fans into custody after clashes between fans and officers led to ticketless spectators storming into Wembley Stadium.

Season 20/21 - July 210712072721376873

Footage shared widely on social media appeared to show fans breaching the barrier and running up the stairs into the stadium ahead of England's match with Italy in the final of Euro 2020.

British police made 49 arrests and said 19 of its officers were injured after confronting volatile crowds near the stadium while they were policing the game on Sunday.

There were also clashes during the match, which Italy won after a penalty shootout, with thousands of fans gathered around the stadium leading to 49 arrests.

"A number of officers remain on duty, helping fans leaving Wembley or central London. We are there to look out for your safety," the Metropolitan Police said on Twitter.

More than 60,000 supporters were expected at Wembley Stadium, down from the 90,000 capacity due to COVID requirements.

After fans stormed the barricades, Wembley said officials "are dealing with an incident that occurred at the outer security perimeter area of the stadium."

"Safety measures were quickly activated in the relevant areas and there were no security breaches of people without tickets getting inside the stadium."

Footage taken from inside the stadium appeared to show a number of fans inside the Wembley Stadium concourse, leaping over barriers and running up stairs.

Despite officials saying no fans had gained access, a number of reporters questioned a group of 30-40 men who had sat in front of the press area before being removed by stewards.

English football's governing body, The Football Association, released a statement on twitter strongly condeming the action of fans.

"These people are an embarrassment to the England team and to all of the true fans who wanted to enjoy one of the most important matches in our history," a spokesperson said.

""We will work with the relevant authorities to take action against anyone who is identified to have illegally forced their way into the stadium."

Fans also been gathered in large numbers around the capital, with a heavy police presence observed at several sites.

Many fans had set up camp early, with thousands queuing to get into pub gardens before lunchtime and others packed into city squares.

Hundreds of fans draped in red-and-white flags threw and smashed bottles in Leicester Square earlier on Sunday.

Hours before kick-off, Wembley Way was crammed with supporters all the way from the underground station to the stadium.

Beer cans and bottles flew through the air as acrid smoke from flares drifted through the crowd, and supporters dressed in England shirts of various vintages sang and chanted.

Report abuse to us, say South Yorkshire Police after England aces targeted by racists - 13/07/2021

Source : https://www.doncasterfreepress.co.uk/

Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho were all targeted with racist messages after they missed penalties in the Euro 2020 final.

Season 20/21 - July 21071307495440352

South Yorkshire Police has said it stands alongside the trio and has urged members of the public to report incidents of racism on social media to them so action can be taken.

In a statement, a force spokesman said: “It’s not the result any of us wanted, but we are still so proud of all the England players.

“We stand with the majority of the country in congratulating them on getting to the final and lifting the spirits of the nation.

“We are disgusted by some of the racist comments we have seen on social media and stand together on calling these people out.

“If you see it, report it so action can be taken. If you have been a victim of hate crime, please report it to us we will listen.”

Meanwhile, England footballer Tyrone Mings has accused home secretary Priti Patel of pretending to be disgusted by racist abuse, after she previously described taking the knee as "gesture politics".

Mings said she had "stoked the fire" by refusing to criticise fans who booed the England team for taking the knee.

Speaking to GB News about the England players' protest in June, Home Secretary Priti Patel said she did not support "people participating in that type of gesture politics".

Asked if she would criticise fans who booed England players taking the knee she said: "That's a choice for them, quite frankly".

Writing on Twitter on Monday evening, Mings said: "You don't get to stoke the fire at the beginning of the tournament by labelling our anti-racism message as 'Gesture Politics' and then pretend to be disgusted when the very thing we're campaigning against, happens.".

Rashford apologised for the missed penalty in a statement posted on Twitter on Monday, but added: "I will never apologise for who I am and where I came from."

Police call for cocaine users to be banned from football matches after Euros mayhem - 16/07/2021

‘Cocaine use is yet to be addressed in football,’ expert warns after worst tournament for crime

Police want the power to ban football fans who take cocaine at matches, over concerns that the drug could be driving disorder and violence.

Some England supporters were filmed openly snorting white powder at Wembley and elsewhere in London during the Euro 2020 final, which saw large numbers of ticketless people force their way into the stadium.

Cheshire Constabulary chief constable Mark Roberts, who is the national lead for football policing, told The Independent he was seeking changes that would allow police to impose Football Banning Orders for drug possession.

He said cocaine use was “prevalent” among football fans and had been recognised as a problem by police at stadiums for years.

“Football reflects the increased use of cocaine in wider society but it can drive some of the negative behaviour,” Mr Roberts added.

“Football Banning Order legislation currently specifies issues relating to alcohol misuse, and we would very much like to bring that up to date with drug usage and make that a trigger in the same way.”

The law allows bans to be imposed if people have been convicted of specific offences and the move would prevent violence or disorder.

Relevant offences include the “possession of alcohol or being drunk while entering/trying to enter a ground”, but there is no equivalent provision for drugs.

Mr Roberts said changing the law “would be useful and reflect some practicalities of what we are seeing”, adding: “It is time for us to review how contemporary some of the Football Banning Order legislation is, because time has moved on and it’s appropriate to review it and check it’s fit for purpose.”

Labour is supporting the call, following reports of people in football crowds “brazenly taking drugs and causing mayhem” during the Euros.

“The law should be changed to keep pace with the real world – and reflect what is causing and contributing to disorder,” said the shadow home secretary, Nick Thomas-Symonds. “That should include the use of all illegal drugs when it comes to Football Banning Orders.”

In the wake of a tide of racist abuse targeted at England footballers following their loss to Italy, Boris Johnson announced the laws would be extended so online abusers can be banned from stadiums for up to 10 years.

The Home Office said the legislation was “kept under constant review” but would not say if it was considering Mr Roberts’s call on drugs.

A behavioural expert questioned whether cocaine use may have played a key role in the chaos at Wembley on the day of the Euro 2020 final.

Thousands of fans without tickets descended on the stadium and an unknown number forced their way in, clashing violently with stewards and police, after hours of drinking and raucous celebrations.

Disorder was reported across the country in town centres and fan zones, at the end of the worst football tournament on record for crime.

Dr Martha Newson, an anthropologist at the University of Kent who specialises in football fandoms, said that “cocaine culture” was growing.

“Alcohol was certainly a central element at Wembley on Sunday, but we also need to consider the role cocaine might have had,” she told The Independent.

“My recent research shows that cocaine use among fans is associated with more fan disorder and violence.

“To sustain a day of drinking and still have the energy and coordination to push through security late in the day would be unusual. For a decade or more, many hardcore fans have used cocaine to maintain their energy in a way that alcohol cannot. Cocaine use is yet to be addressed in football.”

Dr Newson published research in May that found self-reported cocaine use among football fans was higher than the national average.

Almost a third of those who took part in a survey said they had witnessed others taking the class A drug at matches in the past year and 6 per cent reported taking it themselves.

“Football fans may be a population where the aggressive outcomes associated with cocaine use are amplified,” the paper said.

“Cocaine use among football fans has already been associated with the construction of ‘hyper-masculine identities’ and associated aggression.

“Indeed, cocaine has become an element of ‘lad’ culture and, alongside alcohol, fuels competitiveness and aggression from travel to a match, until well after it is finished.”

The research found that football fans who felt “highly fused” to their fellow supporters and took cocaine were “particularly likely to report past aggression toward rivals”.

Dr Newson said it was not possible to say whether cocaine directly caused violence, because of the role of other factors including alcohol and intense social bonding.

But she added: “I think there’s a culture of it in football at the moment, just like there has been with alcohol.”

A Home Office spokesperson said: “Football-related violence and disorder of any kind will not be tolerated, which is why around 1,400 hooligans are currently barred from attending games under Football Banning Orders.

“The legislation is kept under constant review and this week the prime minister announced it would be extended so online abusers can be banned from stadiums for up to 10 years.

“Drugs devastate lives, ruin families and damage communities, which is why we are setting up a new cross-government drugs unit to tackle the issue.”

Breaching a Football Banning Order is a criminal offence, punishable by a maximum sentence of 6 months in prison or a fine of up to £10,000, or both.
